In the episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before," Kirk's name appeared on a grave that had been prepared for him by one of his adversaries on that episode. On the tombstone was inscribed: James S. Kirk. Later in the show his name was mentioned as James Tiberius Kirk--thus the James T. Kirk. It is simply an issue of continuity by the writers of the early episodes.

This was the e-mail I recieved, and I have since sent the link to the website found in properties of the jpeg you posted. I wonder what he will say next? It will be interesting to find out since this guy is supposed to be a real Star Trek guru. Here are his words...
I cannot sign onto the link the fan sent because it is for members only. However, I have double checked my references and I don't know why they are arguing my answer is incorrect--unless she is referring to the fact that I mistyped "later in the show", meaning "later in the series." Kirk only went by two names James S (which was never explained and later changed) and James Tiberius (which was explained). If Angela would like to contact me she can; explain she needn't keep bothering you, but could go directly to the author.
(I just did contact him, because only now did I get his e-mail address)

I'm curious what references he is using. Every book I've read and every picture I've seen, and every episode of "Where No Man Has Gone Before" has confirmed the "R". I'm quite curious of Maddux' references.
Mr(knows an "R" when he sees one)Sensitive

Angela: You are right! I rechecked my own information and discovered that for some reason I had the "S" imbedded in my mind and it is an "R", which was never again referred to. On that point I am right. >From then on through the rest of the series he was James T. Kirk. As I said in my last email, I don't have all 1000 questions committed to memory! I am a ST fan, but not obsessed with it. Plus, it has been 20 years since I began the book and about six since it was published. Sorry for the confusion, but congrats to you and your friends.
peace, john maddux
