To the best of my knowledge, it was "Leave it to Beaver"

Not quite..."Leave It to Beaver" didn't actually show a toilet in any episode...but they did show the toilet tank. The episode that was to include a toilet was entitled "Captain Jack". Wally and Beaver order an alligator but are disapointed when they receive a baby alligator instead of a full grown one. Determined to keep the pet anyway they decide to place it in the toilet tank. Therein lay the problem. In 1957 the networks were squeamish enough about showing bathrooms on television -- no way was CBS going to allow a bathroom and a toilet to appear in one of their series, but the "Captain Jack" episode as filmed required showing both. CBS refused to approve the episode, but there was no way it could be redone without the bathroom scenes, since there was nowhere else in the house the boys could reasonably hide an alligator. After several rounds of wrangling between the network and the production company, a compromise was reached: The show episode could include shots of the toilet tank, but not the toilet itself. So, in one very brief scene, we see the boys feeding their baby alligator in the middle of the bathroom floor, then Wally walks over to the toilet tank, puts Captain Jack back inside it, and places the lid back on the tank. The toilet itself is never seen, only the top portion of the tank.

Sorry for the long post...can't add links for some reason today but the entire story can be found at www.snopes.com

Georgia is correct; I've seen the episode, and I've also seen stills from the episode. It was a tank only shot. I've been looking for information on which show was the first to show the entire toilet, but haven't found anything yet.

According to www.imdb (the Internet Movie Database), the Leave It to Beaver episode "Cap'n Jack" was shown of 10/11/57, and was the first TV viewing of a toilet. As I stated above, it only showed the tank, but apparently that's good enough. I suppose it depends on your definition of "toilet".
