Mozart, if you're talkin' T.V. commercial:

The first TV commercial advertisement was sponsored by the Bulova Watch company on July 1, 1941. Bulova paid $9.00 for a 10-second Bulova Watch Time announcement superimposed on the test pattern at 2:29:50 P.M..
And this was on NBC.

If you're talkin' radio, the first NBC commerical was in 1935 for a product called
Wheatena, which was a hot cereal.

Wheatena sponsored the Popeye radio program September 10, 1935 thru March 28, 1936. During that time, 87 episodes aired on the NBC Red Network. Wheatena is said to have paid King Features $1,200 per week for the rights to the sailor. Don't know what NBC's cut of this was.

Then Popeye got the green stuff

Wheatena made a second attempt at broadcasting
Popeye on another network -- CBS from August 31, 1936 to February 26, 1937. Spinach was again replaced with Wheatena.

"If fans could not get enough of Popeye in print and on theater screens, they could also tune in to hear him on NBC radio when Popeye the Sailor began airing on September 10, 1935. The program was sponsored not by a spinach company but Wheatena, which meant that the breakfast cereal now became Popeye’s food of choice. Heard three days a week, the program had its final NBC broadcast on March 27, 1936. On August 31, 1936 the show moved to CBS and ran until February 26, 1937, returning for a final season from May 2 to July 29, 1938." - King Features.com

I knew this answer (that Bulova was the subject of the first TV commercial) yet missed it tonight at a Trivia Contest. While the MC said "Television ad" I somehow fixated on "first TV ad for a toy" and answered that question (Correctly, but it still didn't count).
