Ooooh, sitcom as we know it today,
I would have to say I Love Lucy ,
though there were several "sketch"
type comedy shows before that, I
like the question, need to look
into it a little further I think.

Both are wrong. 'spit, I am fairly sure that you can figure this one out, and Koz, judging from your Bronze status, you should be able to as well. The answer was mentioned several times in 'another place' as the answer to another, similar question.

But history's very first sitcom, predating "I Love Lucy" by four years and "The Honeymooners" by eight, premiered at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1947.

"Mary Kay and Johnny" was created by and starred Mary Kay and Johnny Stearns. Like their sitcom doppelgangers, they were happy young marrieds building a life together in the Big Apple. But, more than that, they were TV pioneers beyond imagining.

Not only was it the first Sitcom, but (Are you ready ?) - THEY WERE THE FIRST TV COUPLE TO SHARE A BED !!!! They were also the first to have the TV mom have a baby along with the sctress playing the mom. Lucy gets all the credit, but Mary Kay did it first. Below form the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Monday December 31, 2001:
"The whole program is based on our actual married life," Johnny figured, "so why not write the pregnancy in?" The blessed event occurred Dec. 19, 1948, as did the TV birth (albeit offscreen) on that same night's show. Thus it predated the parallel pregnancies of Lucille Ball and Lucy Ricardo by four years.
And that's the truth.
