Great story, but according to Earl Wilson, Gleason was calling himself The Great One in letters to Wilson before anyone knew who Gleason was, in the mid 1940s. WIlson, who knew everything about everybody, had never even heard of Gleason before the letters. In other words, Gleason created Gleason's reputation himself.
