I just upgraded my mom's AT&T Worldnet ISP software and installed a new anti-virus/utilites program (OnTrack's System Suite). She's got Win98, 64 megs RAM, & a 4G hard drive.

She just started having problems with Solitaire & Freecell, and her logon settings aren't working properly (I'll contact AT&T about this).

1. Solitaire gives her an Illegal Operation error message & won't open:

SOL caused a general protection fault
in module KRNL386.EXE at 0002:00003077.

2. Freecell just freezes up arbitrarily.

I uninstalled, then reinstalled them from the Win98 CD; went to microsoft's site (searched KRNL386.EXE) but couldn't find applicable help (found "close" help, but nothing specific); went to OnTrack's site, no dice; disabling the firewall/anti-virus (only off-line) didn't help either.

Maybe one of The Masters can?

Sonnet:
ivnj's got you headed in the right direction, this should
narrow it down some. CLICK Here

Seem there are a few things that can cause this. See if any
of the mentioned are causeing your problem.

If your mom likes MS Freecell, I think that she'll love
RUSCELL. This plays just like Freecell but with beautiful graphics.
you can download Russcell HERE.

One caution about this program though;
It's highly addictive ! eek I'll never go back to that
wimpy freecell. razz razz razz

Check that the file size of KRNL386.EXE is 127,184 bytes. If it is not, extract a new copy from the Win_16.CAB file (NOT Mini.CAB).

Go to Add/Remove Programs, double-click any Office XP program, and select Add or Remove Features. Expand Office Shared Features, then disable Alternative User Input and click Update. Repeat these steps for each Office XP product.

Open the System.ini file with Notepad, and check the [386Enh] section. You will see a number of entries which begin Device=. For each entry which does NOT have an asterisk (" * ") after the equal sign, insert REM and a space in front of the line. Click File, Exit, and Yes to save the changes and close Notepad.

Extract a new copy of OLECLI.DLL from the Windows CD or installation (CAB) files, and place it in the C:\Windows\System folder.

If an updated version of Internet Explorer is installed, restart in Safe Mode and rename the following files by adding .OLD to each filename:

oleaut32.dll, olepro.32.dll, stdole.tlb

Open the C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer folder. You should see at least one program whose name is in the form of ieXsetup.exe, where X is a version of Internet Explorer. Double-click the program which corresponds to the installed version of Internet Explorer to reinstall.

Well, that's it for me, at least for Windows components which might be responsible. You should try disabling all startup programs and determine if the problem still occurs.

I'll try them out next time I'm back over at my mom's.

Byter: I'll try the Russcell, but my mom is soooooooo picky. I've downloaded at least 8 different Freecell games & she didn't like any of them - don't think I tried Russcell.

Thanks, again.

Oops. The KRNL386.exe file is in Win98_41.cab, and its size should be 127,040.

Thanks, TomGL2:

I'll try that. I did a diagnostic start-up, awhile back, and determined the culprit was the anti-virus/utility program my mom has installed. If this doesn't work, I believe I have her talked into a new PC (she needs one, regardless) and Norton products.
