My boyfriend and i bought a house together a few years ago. Turns out we got a better mortgage rate if we only used his credit to apply for the mortgage. Our broker told us that we could then later add my name to the house.

How do we do that?

Hi tamtam. Welcome to AnswerPool. Smile

There are two ways that you can add your name to the house.

1. You can refinance. This would be my first choice and would add your name to the house. Have your boyfriend contact your current mortgage company about rates.

2. You can have him sign a Quit Claim Deed which would add your name.

Quitclaim deed

From Lawdepot (link below): Q. Can I use a quitclaim deed to transfer a portion of my property to someone else?

A. Yes, you can do this by listing yourself as the Grantor, and both you and the other person as the Grantees. Each Grantee would receive an equal share of the property. For example, if there are three Grantees including yourself, then each Grantee will receive a one-third interest in the property.

Most metropolitan areas have a legal firm that charges a flat low fee ($30-$50) for a first time 30 minute consultation. It is well worth it to spend that money to make sure that Oregon doesn't have any special laws that require more than a notarized quit claim deed.

The Clerk/Recorder for your county can tell you what will be required in your jurisdiction and their advice will be both accurate and free.

Thanks everybody for your answers! I never even thought about the refinace option which sounds great because we have been thinking about refinancing.

Thanks again!

Having your name on a loan isn't necessarily the same as having your name on the house. Check Oregon laws before assuming anything.
