This one may be controversial. According to a press release from the Swiss Center in New York, site, "Switzerland has the world’s highest concentration of museums - 980 in total!"

7,523,934 population (July 2006 est.) / 980 museums = 7677 people per museum

41,290 sq km / 980 museums = 1 museum per every 42.13 sq km (16.26 sq mi)

My guess would have been Italy, but I would have been wrong in error.

This site states it has "Descriptions of 3000 italian museums."

58,133,509 population (July 2006 est.)/ 3000 museums = 19,377.84 people per museum

301,230 sq km / 3000 museums = 1 museum per 100 sq km (38.61 sq mi)

The only information I found about Holland was the oft-repeated statement that "Holland has the highest concentration of museums in the world, with 42 in Amsterdam alone." I could find no number of the museums in the country. Holland's area of 41,526 sq km is almost exactly the same as that of Switzerland, and its population is 16,491,461, over twice as large, so the situation may be that one has more museums per capita but the other has more musuems (or fractions thereof) per sq km. I am searching the vast Greyed Archives for more information, but I don't know if I will find anything useful regarding this question.

"As of 2005, the population of the (Amsterdam) proper is 742,951[1]; the population of the greater Amsterdam area is approximately 1.5 million." - Wikiopedia

742,951 pop / 42 museums = 1 museum for every 17,689 people per museum

If Amsterdam is the higher example of museum density in Holland, as it would seem to make sense, then Holland does not have fewer people per museum than Switerland. (Note that I used the population figure of Amsterdam proper, which, in my opinion, would give Holland the advantage in this comparison.

"It is the largest city in Sweden, with a population of 774,000 within the borders of Stockholm Municipality. Generally speaking however, Stockholm includes a broader area, with the Stockholm urban area population reaching 1.2 million, and the Metropolitan Stockholm area 1.7 million." - Wikipedia

"The city has the highest concentration of museums in the world, with 70 museums readily available in the vicinity."

Apparently, Stockhold has more museums per capita than Amsterdam, which seems to imply that Holland may not even be close to the highest concentration of museums in the world, based on population.

It has been my experience that, when a statement is repeated verbatim from one site to another, all the claims are based on one unsupported statement somewhere. Fuse and I found that out in " The Case of the 98 mph Dragonfly ."

Now tell us which country a) has the highest number of museums which are open on the day and at the times which a visitor wants to go b) has a tourist office which is not manned entirely by students who are not from the town and who know nothing about current opening (or, indeed, anything else Big Grin )

I stand by my original answer, unless you can provide a credible source; Switzerland

I just checked Greece, and it doesn't beat any country that we have discussed. France is the only other country that may have a challenge, in my opinion, but then, I never would have thought that Switzerland would lead the list.

I was ready to retract, or withdraw my answer, but this site claims that there are over 1,000 Museums in The Netherlands. I know, "per Capita", Switzerland still wins. But "per Capita" was not mention in the question, only the word "concentration" was, which deals with the size of the country. Here
