Arthur Miller's famous play THE CRUCIBLE uses the setting of the SALEM WITCH TRIALS as a metaphor for what?

The Crucible was a thinly disguised denunciation of McCarthyism, the BlackList, and the communist witch hunts of the 1950s. It serves as a wonderful balance to Elia Kazan's movie, On the Waterfront, which Kazan made to explain his naming names to the House Un-American Activities Commitee.
See here for some sites on about HUAC.
