When his call-up finally came it was to Carlisle that he was required to report. He found himself in a hut with ordinary men from all over Cumberland and Lancashire. He conveys very piquantly the indignity of being stripped of all his individuality and, as he watches his civilian clothing being stuffed into a sandbag in order to be sent home, he comments balefully : "I felt halfway already to being a name on a war memorial."
Yes, quite right, for it was indeed to Carlisle (my home town, no less!!) that he had to report. I'm glad you liked the article. I read the five books in the Bannerdale series when I was at school and recently assembled an entire set again - even though they were all out of print for ages. He truly was a mould-breaking writer for children. All the best.
