The British were not around in those years. Funny, . But they discovered something they had never seen before,.... nope not the indians either. The word I am looking for was borrowed from the "Tupi language". That word is only used by the French Canadians and the French people of Louisiana. French from France use a different word for it.

Yes indeed, Bravo!! "Mosquito" is, in modern French a "Moustique". But "Maringouin" was and still is used by French Canadians & French from Louisiana (Cajun). After all they came originaly from canada and were deported to Louisiana by the British. And the word became a town in Louisiana. Remember that the first French settlers in 1530's didn't speak the language of "Oc" ( South of France) but most of them spoke "Oil" ( North of France). Somehow the "Tupi" word got into the language. Those stingers have been reported to be real pests for these people in the new world. And still are. I found this page (translated from French)where is it used. And you will find here the town of Maringouin listed. Excellent job Dogspit!
