How could the word 'fish' be spelt 'ghoti'?
(The idea is said to be a jest by George Bernard Shaw, who campaigned to reform and simplify English spelling)

Because the programmer had a sense of humour, that's all (No, really. This little joke is found in other 'dictionaries' and 'spell checkers', according to the person on the site answerbank.co.uk, which is where I found this story. That's their only explanation)
