"Onions, Onions, Onions"; which was a crying shame, if you ask me.

Take heart..you are not alone Smile I remember a lot of the old comedians, some of whom I saw live. From that era, seen live: Norman Evans,Jimmy Wheeler, Arthur Askey,Hylda Baker (with stooge: 'she knows yer know! Wink), Cyril Fletcher, Chic Murray and Jimmy James and Company all come to mind.

So the Londoner, scruffily dressed in a well-worn suit and old trilby, playing the violin to close his act, always with the farewell line " Aye, aye, that's yer lot!" is still in memory Smile

Jimmy Wheeler - yes, I saw him on stage - Hylda Baker and that tall friend of hers with the handbag - yes, I saw her in Blackpool. Chic Murray and Maidie, Jimmy James the perennial drunkard, yes, memories galore there, for I saw them at the theatre in Carlisle, before the municipal authorities closed it down. Jimmy James did his famous sequence where he came on with a quiet unassuming henchman who was holding a box under his arm, which he claimed contained a lion.
(No, I won't spoil the ending for you Fred, but I'm sure you remember it).

One of Jimmy James' Company was the stick thin, tall, stammering, Eli Woods. He would sometimes be the man with the box:the duties were shared around the Company.

At one point in the act Eli would wander on and say, sotto voce and conspiratorially to Jimmy James:

" Are you p-p-putting it about that I... I... I.. I.. am d.. d... d.. d... daft?"

There'd be a very long pause while James drew on his cigarette, contemplating this complaint, and then he would say, in a mystified tone:

"Why?.....Is it supposed to be a secret?"

The man's timing was perfection. His stage image was of a man who'd just come out after a good evening session in the pub.He was , in life, teetotal. That made him a great contrast to the seeming legions of comics who were alcoholics, who 'liked a drink'. Jimmy Wheeler was one. Towards the end of his career he'd close the first half, not the second half as the star would normally do. That was because by the end of the second half he'd have been too drunk !
