The reason I posted other links to the credit information is that the site SR linked to had the following "facts": Once regarded as a separate species, the Alaskan Brown Bear (U. a. middendorffi) is a very large subspecies of Grizzly, usually 800 to 1,200 pounds (360–545 kg) at eight or nine years of age, and eventually reaching 1,700 pounds (770 kg), making it the world’s largest terrestrial carnivore.and The Polar Bear, the world's largest land predator, prospers in the harshest environments. Males can be 3m tall and weigh 650kg (1,400lb), while females weight about 250kg (550lb).(Bold mine - DG) I don't know the difference between the two bolded statements. Both bears are carnivores and both are predators. Both are generally regarded as land animals. (I know that some regard polar bears as maritime animals but they are born on land and hunt on land as well as in the water.) They seem to say the same thing about the two very different species of bears. The site also says that walruses have no known predators, yet YouTube has at least three different clips of polar bears attacking and killing walruses. (Warning: The first one ain't pretty, folks.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ob_oD1IsYbEhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JR-7lOciKl8&mode=related&search=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teHdUV93WHs&mode=related&search=(This one shows numerous bears coming to attack a herd of walruses. In two different shots, I counted over twenty bears either coming in for an attack or feasting afterwards.) The site also gives 80 years as the top life span of whales, yet just a few months ago, a whale estimated at 115-130 years was killed, and the accompanying article stated that really big whales may reach up to 200 years in age.
