Who wrote a play called "Still Life" - and who directed the world-famous film on which it was based?

Noel Coward wrote the play Still Life and David Lean turned it into that frightfully lovely film 'Brief Encounter'.
I can't watch the film without thinking of Betty Marsden in 'Round the Horn' as Dame Celia Molestrangler "many, many times "
