If I remember rightly near the beginning of the book, one of the residents of the nursing home is bragging that he used to work for a circus and that he used to carry the water for the elephants. The main character disputes his story saying you could never carry enough water for elephants... or something like that. Confused

Just realised my copy of this novel is missing...darn I have NO idea who I lent it to Frown

No idea what Walter books are, though I do remember old Walter (Gabriel), in the Archers, 'An everyday story of country folk', on the steam wireless : 'Aaah, Dan, me ole dear, me ole beauty.... [all in a mummerset accent and followed by talk of clamping your mangel wurzels,before Winter draws on ] Is that anything to do with them?

The mangel wurzel is another root crop, like a beet but bigger.We feed it to cattle as it's too big to mash.
