Well, I've only heard about it from other people. What I know is that it's a type of industrial (not industrial metal keep in mind) with obvious gothic characteristics in the mood. Here's a solid definition of it. I'm not sure why Nine Inch Nails is in there since they say the style is pretty new. Maybe they're refering to The Fragile. Here's another definition from Wikipedia. It describes darkwave as a "prettier" type of goth/industrial music. It also gives two darkwave record labels and a few more darkwave artists. (I was able to find stuff by most of them on singingfish.com.) Here's something I came across in a search. A band called Torse. And there seems to be plenty of audio available to give you an idea of a type of darkwave (they say they also combine noise music so I'm not sure how much darkwave plays apart. Judging from the description above, the mood is probably where the darkwave comes in, not so much the intensity that the description says darkwave has). (I kind of like this one I'm listening to now, actually.)
