Two ways that I can think of. Much like 3rd party candidates in politics, alternative music is too far in a particular direction to gain massive following, but it can draw enough of a following that mainstream music starts to adopt pieces of it in an attempt to win the alternative listeners back. The second way is simply that mainstream musician may find somethign they like in alternative music and incorporate it for that reason.
