I am wondering if anyone knows about buying things online that come from another country. For instance, tobacco, you can buy tobacco online way cheaper, so when it comes to buying this, it comes from another country, is this somehow illegal? or what about the Tax part of it? If you buy cigarettes online and you are paying any tax on them just shipping and handling, are you then responsible to pay state tax on them? I have a friend whom is buying tobacco online which she just pays for shipping, I somehow wonder if this is illegal or if you can get in trouble for not paying state tax? Does anyone have any information about this? Thank you

Yes, cigarettes from another country are illegal unless the federal tax is paid. You may get a break on a small amount if you are coming back from Canada or Mexico, but a large quantity will cost you. Even states get into the act. Missouri has cheaper cigarette tax than Illinois, so many people from my area of Illinois go to Missouri to buy cigarettes. Illinois, not wanting to be left out, passed a law limiting the number of cartons of cigarettes you can bring into the state. (I have NO idea if anyone checks, but if you have an accident coming back from a smoke trip, you can get fined if they want to count.)
