I've had a couple of problems come up lately that I haven't been able to solve, so I need those with better minds than mine to help me.
First of all, I have a Compaq5000 system, with 64MB memory and 30G hard drive, and run Windows ME.
First of all, after starting the system, I used to be able to access the Net either by clicking on the icon on the desktop, or even just by pushing one button on the keyboard. After doing this, the dial-up program would load, the connection would be made, and whichever program I wanted to load on the Net would load. All at the touch of one button. Now, however, I have had to move the dial-up program icon onto the desktop, load the dial-up program, and then load whichever Net program I wanted. I know it's a matter of pressing two buttons now instead of one, but I'd like the system to work the way it's supposed to.
The second problem involves MSN Explorer. When I want to use MSN Explorer, it usually doesn't load the first time. Instead of loading, it will freeze, and that stupid butterfly just sits there flapping its fool wings off. I have to reboot at least once, and sometimes more than that, before it works. Since my wife and I have separate MSN accounts, this can be a pain when one of us exits the program and the other wants to use it. I have no problem with Internet Explorer. It still works, as do other programs. It's just MSN Explorer that gives me the trouble. The only thing I've done different lately is download the free ZoneAlarm program.
Help!!!!!

I suspect the "default" settings on your keyboard "Internet" button have somehow been altered.
If you open Internet Explorer, then click "Tools" and Internet Options, Programs tab you can check the option at the bottom of the page to have Internet Explorer check to see whether it is the default browser. Click OK, then click on a link that will open the browser. When the dialog box asks if I.E. is the default, say yes.
In the same Internet Options window, click the "Connections" tab and see what is checked regarding your dial-up connection. I suggest you check "Always dial my default connection", if it isn't already checked.
If the fault is with the keyboard, you can reprogram it. Compaq has assistance available with this via their Web page at:
There are several pages by Compaq which discuss programming the keyboard. Unfortunately, I don't have enough information to know what system you have (Presario 5000?, other model name and 5000 number?) or which of the two Internet keyboards you have. Click the link below, then type in the terms "program Internet keyboard" and use your make/model knowledge to get to the correct page:
As far as the MSN Explorer, I am not very familiar with that program. I'm wondering if it might not be easier not to have two different browsers installed. Perhaps remove the MSN Explorer and use Internet Explorer all the time.
Are you using MSN as your Internet Service Provider?
I hope you will find something here helpful!

Thanks, Dwight! I'm now back to one-button Net accessibility. For some reason, in the dial-up setting, Never Dial a Connection was checked instead of Always Dial a Connection. Changing this restored my one-button ability. Wouldn't want to strain my fingers having to push two buttons instead of one.
As for MSN, I've noticed a couple of things: One is that it does eventually load if left long enough.....sometimes as long as ten minutes. And it usually works fine for my wife and I as long as whenever one of us is through, we sign out and sign the other in right away. Leaving it for awhile seems to cause it to freeze more. So we're working around this problem.
Thanks again! We have learned a lot just from your (and others as well) responses to others' questions as well. Keep up the good work! And GO MARINERS IN 2003!!!!

I have been having the same sort of problems with WIN ME (MSN Explorer). It freezes, locks up, bleeds into other programs, gives me error messages then closes, etc. MS says it's the machine, but my son assures me that Windows 8 will fix everything (you never get the same answer twice out of those people, even if you are related). The MFG never calls back. My files have disappeared or become corrupted.
Whew! Maybe I will go to a MAC!

Mac is not going anywhere either! U just need to stay away form ME! Its the worst for a main machine with too many important files! Get XP (ACA) like I said earlier!

For an update, my wife and I decided to get rid of MSN Explorer and go with Internet Explorer. We also upgraded from 64 MB memory to 320 MB. And we haven't had any problems at all since then! I guess I won't be pitching this thing out the window after all.
