Is there any reason not to delete Internet Logs? I'm running 98 and looking in Windows Explorer under Wndows the Internet Logs has stuff going back several years.

If it is not needed where can I set this for automatic deletions or not to save them at all?

Are you talking about your Web Cache, cookies, History, Temporary Internet Files...?

If you don't have a utilities program (such as Norton System Works), you'll probably have to do it manually.

If I recall Win98 correctly:
Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup (Dwight, please check to make sure I didn't forget something here).

You may want to handle your cookies manually (so you don't delete the good ones, like AnswerPool), unless you have so many that it would take you a month of Sundays to go through them all. Any cookies you delete, you can get back the next time you visit a site.

Same for your History. The Web Cache can be safely cleared, completely (these are copies of the graphics from the sites you've visited - totally unecessary to keep all these).

Someone else will give you more specifics if I've missed something here.

Most of them are tmp files Sonnet. There is one about every 4 to 10 days listed under c:windows:internet logs . I'm assuming being temp files they can go but I don't like assumung with this machine. What is bothersome is why it is only every few days. And the size varies a lot. They go back over a year so if I don't need them where can I set it to eliminate them?

I clean these things occasionally but i'm always leary on deleting.

I just remembered! I believe Win98 has a Task Scheduler (may be called "wizard" in Win98...not sure of the exact wording) so you can schedule a task like deleting Temporary Internet files...you have to pick a day and time for it to do the scheduled task. It's located in the same place as the Disk Cleanup. I believe you can tell it which tasks, specifically, you want it to do...like delete the Temp files weekly.

It doesn't take very long (well, it might take a little longer for you if you have "years" worth in there).
Yikes! I just looked at mine...time for some house cleaning. LOL

Gatman, I keep about 8 cookies in my files. I clear the rest out every night. I go to my desktop and click on "My software programs"(hope you have it) and when that opens I click on Folders which is next to Search. When that page opens I scroll down to "owner" click on that and that gives me a drop down, where I click cookies. That will take me to my cookies cache. Any you don't want, just left click on it and click delete on the box that will show up. After you have deleted all the cookies you desire, go to the recycle bin and click on that. It'll ask you what you want to do with the list of cookies in the bin, delete the whole mess or reinstate. Your choice. Hope this was one of your question parts. If not, someone else may need this and read it.

To delete my temp. int. files, the way I do it is to click on Tools, and the dropdown will show Internet options on the last line. Click on that and under the general heading, go to the 2nd line and click on "Delete Files", and then OK. Which will almost all the time empty your temp file folder.

To completely empty your temp int. file folder, the way I do it is to click, Start, All Programs, Accessories, System tools, and then Disk Cleanup. In a couple of minutes a box will appear with the files in the computer, If my temp int. file folder is empty, shows 0, I click OK. If there is a number in the line, I click on it and it will turn blue and I click OK. This should empty the file completely. I do this every day or so. Hope this helps.

How can I follow the path Johnny Velo is talking about to review the cookies on XP-Pro?

From this page (assuming you're on IE), go to Tools -> Internet Options -> (in the Temporary Internet Files [middle] section) Settings -> View Files.

You can also go to Internet Options via Start Panel -> Control Panel, or go to Start Panel and right-click either Internet Explorer or Outlook Express.

That's how to get to the list. What you do with it is up to you!

Ewood27, thanks for the tip. It's a good alternate way to get there.

NQD, I am not familiar with XP-pro. I have XP home edition. They should not be that much different. Follow my steps or Ewoods steps and it will get you there, hopefully.

Go to WWW.xblock.com download their FREE version of XCleaner. It cleans things up on command. To find the FRee edition, click on FAQ's tab at top, scroll through to find the blue link to FREE.

Today I retried Ewoods method of getting to my temporary files. Guess what? This way gives every last single file my computer has seen. The way I was doing it through the "my software" and then folders way, does not give me my complete files. Ewoods method is much better. Gives me every one in the computer and easy to delete unwanted ones. I even get the Favicon addresses of people's avatars every time I click on someone's post.

BTW, nerdqueendeluxe, are you still having trouble getting to the internet temporary files? Roll Eyes
