I have Yahoo IM open - it indicates that it is "not responding", but no matter how I try to close it, it will not close. This has happened before and even rebooting won't help. I have tried to close by clicking on the X in the corner of the window - it tells me it's not responding and asks if I want to close and I click on yes. Even if I go to Windows Task Manager and see it as not responding, I try to close it and it goes through the motions but just doesn't work.

Is there any other way to close it???

Have you tried pushing ctrl-alt-dlt at the same time and clicking the "end task" button from there?

when you press ctrl-alt-dlt it brings up the task manager - and that is where I tried to do it - and the "end task" wouldn't work...I tried it over and over and it just ignored my request Frown

Asking a silly question... Have you tried "Right clicking" on the Red Yahoo icon next to the clock? (and selecting "Exit" or "Sign out of Yahoo & exit"(bottom 2 items on menu) this should force a closure OK? Wink
Also look up the list there is an item which says "Disconnect" But I have never used it(I always use "Exit" to close)

I haven't Dwight - because it doesn't happen all the time - just once in a while. Occasionally IE does the same thing and I cannot end task no matter what I do. Do I need to uninstall and reinstall you think? I did get around the problem by shutting off the power - couldn't do it any other way.

We are down to "Desperate measures"now !Frown
Don't panic! Wink
If uninstalling won't work that way. try this...
Either press the Start button and look up Yahoo messenger on the "All programs" list and select "Uninstall Yahoo Messenger" pressed this? Roll Eyes
No joy? Frown Could be your prob comes from a ""bad install" (we all get them from time to time Confused)
Then do this .......( I've done the"donkey work" for you Cool)
click on the Start button find "Search"
when the new window open look down the left of the screen for the items with the green arrows.
Click on the one marked "All files and folders"
(3rd down)
Then when the Window "changes", in the "Top" box called "All or part of the file name" Copy this into it:"C:\Program Files\Yahoo!"
Then press the search button....
You will get the file location "come up"on the right hand side of the Window Smile
Ok. you can now delete the file by right clicking on the item (selecting Delete from the"dropdown" Menu) or opening it? (only 2 files inside and deleting the Messenger file) though I recommend you delete Both OK?
then go to your Recycle bin and empty it(checking that the files have "arrived" there)
Now you should be able to do a "Restart" or "Shut down" with no fears of it not working Razz
Should you now reinstall Yahoo it will go smoothly Wink

About the Internet Explorer:

You don't mention your operating system, but unless you're running Windows XP, you can run the Internet Explorer Repair Tool.

For Windows XP, see this page.

For earlier Windows versions, you can run the repair tool this way:
Click Start/Run
Type:
msinfo32
Click OK

In the Microsoft System Information Utility, click "Tools", then Internet Explorer Repair Tool.

Choose the "Repair" option. Hopefully, this will solve the "lockup" problem with Internet Explorer.

About the Yahoo Messenger:

I would suggest that you un-install the program normally (that is, using the Control Panel Add-Remove Programs utility). Then reinstall it and see if that solves this lockup problem. If the "normal" un-install won't run using the Add-Remove Programs utility (or if Yahoo Messenger isn't listed in the programs list), then follow the instructions provided by bedstor.

I hope this is of some assistance!

Dwight
