i am trying to open www.excite.com with no luck.

i dont get an error message; once i type in the address in my broswer bar and hit enter, nothing happens. the little windows symbol dosent start flapping, nothing at all happens!

i am using win xp, i am thinking i still have left over parts of spybot somewhere, as i have seen a message at the bottom of the screen that says something like spybot has detected bad java or something like that.
i cant find any reference to spybot in the computer, ive searched the registry, program files, the add/remove thing, not a word about it, yet ive seen it!

help!

edit: i found the error when trying to access excite:
a bad URL http://www.excite.com (Excite) has been detected by spybot-S&D IE helper

i uninstalled and delted spybot! what is it STILL doing interfering with my explorer?

Sorry to be so anal, but you said you deleted Spybot. Do you mean you used the Spybot uninstall program? If you just deleted some part of Spybot, elements of the program may still be "running". (Quotes, because it isn't running exactly, just not completely stopped.)

If you did actually uninstall Spybot, then disregard this post.

no, i used the remove programs thing through the control panel.

should i have used the uninstall that was part of the actual program, and if so, do you think re-downloading it, installing it, and then using the built in uninstall would work?

Using the Add-Remove Programs utility in the Control Panel should work fine, but reinstalling Spybot, the uninstalling it again is probably a good idea. It is possible some portion of the program was not properly uninstalled.

Can you open excite by clicking on a link, instead of typing the URL into the address bar? Just curious.

Use Search to locate the HOSTS file, which should be in the Windows or Winnt folder. Right-click the file and click Properties, clear the checkbox beside Read-only, then click Apply and OK. Double-click the file and choose to open it with Notepad.

Look for a line similar to

127.0.0.1 www.excite.com

If the line exists, either delete the line, or insert a # and space at the start of the line (i.e., "# "). Click File and Save As.

In Save as type, choose All files. Scroll to the right, double-click the HOSTS file and click Yes, then close Notepad.

Thanks a million Tom.

Here's a site that discribes the "HOSTS" file.
Very interesting stuff.

ok! spybot is gone!
i can actually get onto the start page for excite, but when clicking on the chat link, i get an error page saying that my browser isnt allowing cookies/javascript, or that i have a firewall that is interfering.

im pretty sure i can accept cookies/javascript, but can anyone give me instructions to make darn sure?
and same for the firewall. i dont even know where to look for that.

In Internet Explorer, click on Tools/Internet Options/Security tab. Use can click the "Default Level" button. In the "Privacy" tab you can set your cookie preference. Mine is set to "medium".

If that doesn't fix it, TomGL2 posted the procedure to download Microsoft Java: Click Here.

By the way, I'm running Spybot on my machine and am able to access Excite.com normally, suggesting that Spybot is not what is causing the problem.
