I am never quite sure what catergorey to post my questions so I just put it here.

As a few of you might remember, bedstor and putasolutions, I was having difficulties with Internet Explorer.

Well I am having problems again but this time it has affected my entire computer. It has been going on for a few weeks.

Once again, I can log onto AOL just fine. I have absolutly no problems using IE there.

However, if I am in AOL and I minimize it to go do something else outside of AOL, such as RealPlayer or IE, then it all freezes up.

If I have more than one open window at a time for IE, like if I am doing research or clicked on a link that opened a new window, my computer freezes up.

What I mean when I say "freezes up" is that the computer itself does but my mouse does not. I can move my mouse everywhich way, just can't click on anything.

When I do Ctrl, Alt & Delte, the box comes up and says that any open IE window is (not responding) so I click on them to close the window and the page still stays there as does the close program box. Or like sometimes some of the box just disappears. The only solution is to restart my computer.

Yesterday, I was about ready to throw my computer out onto highway 101 because I had to restart it at least 15 times because it kept "freezing up".

And yesterday a couple of times, I clicked on the IE icon and this box came up asking me if I wanted to open it or save it. You know like when you download something. I just clicked on cancel and clicked the icon again and it worked ok.

I cannot figure out what the problem is. It is making me absolutly crazy having to restart my computer several times a day.

I am having some other problems as well. As much as I hate to reformat, could this be the only solution? To just start all over again? I don't like doing that because of having to reinstall all my drivers and doing all the windows updates and losing my stuff I have downloaded for my game and all my favorites.
But if I have to then I will.

I hope all of this has made ssense. I will post all of the vital information again. Thank You Very Much for any help. it is greatly appreciated.

1.10 GHZ AMD Athlon XP
256RAM
WIN98SE
AOL9.0

It might be AOL. I had similar problems when
I used it. To me, there is no worse internet
provider. It seems to just take over your computer completely.

If my Aol browser goes wrong It gets similar probs to what you are having
But there is no need to delete anything Confused I note Something you did not say you did was reinstalling the AOL Adapter
This links everything together and failures are common Smile symptoms vary but blank pages and No homepage are the first sign of failure Frown
Will take 2 mins of your time and tell us if any difference is made? Smile
1)Click on the AOL icon in the corner next to the Clock
2)On the menu, click on System Information..(2nd to bottom Item)
3)Grey window pops up Click on the Utilities tab which is on the right on AOL 9 but is in the Center on AOL 8 (leads to the same place)
4) There are 4 buttons here 3 of which need pressing
4a) Starting at the top "Clear Browser Cache" this will clear the Temp files .
I note that AOL 9 uses more disk space on the hard drive for page access, and clearing this will ease the burden.(takes several seconds to clear)
Note the number in the top display will go to 0KBs
The lower number is the setting for the cache size set in Internet Explorer Options..But if set too high or low your browsing will be patchy at times Roll Eyes
4b) This is the Biggie.. the button called "Rebuild AOL Adapter" press this when you are offline
It displays an uninstalling message then all you do is reset the computer
Computer restarts and you'll see a small message saying something like:"Reinstalling AOL Adapter"
4c) Go online as usual and... things should be as you'd like to find them? Roll Eyes
5) If still a bit suspect return to the System information window and this time press the Quick Restorebutton (I think on 8 this was called "reset to default"?) then press the Close button at the bottom
One way or the other doing the above will restore a lot of reliability back to your browsingCool

Thank You, Dixie Smile I have had aol for 10 years and know it causes alot of problems but it's kind of like old reliable and I don't want to switch to someone else. Roll Eyes

bedstor- I tried your first solution with reinstalling the adapter and thought it worked but found out about 5 minuets ago it did not. So I tried your sof resetting aol back to it;s original state. So far so good but I will keep my fingers crossed.

I will let you know how it goes.

Thank You Very Much, bedstor, for all your help Smile

Smile Oh boy, my very first posting.

I have found that AOL 9 is NOT compatable with 98. (at least on my old computer), and I know others who agreed with me.
Went back to AOL8 plus and everything cleared up just fine...
Now - AOL 9 is just fine with the XP's.
Try that and see wot happens.

I'd also agree with it I'd run Version 8 or Version 7 because 9 is A bit of a resource hogger Frown and the WIN98 software can't cope well with itFrown
And... Welcome to AP Fritzzs Smile

Hey, Fritzzs Smile Welcome to the Pool!

Thanks very much for that information. I never thought of AOL 9.0 causing such problems. But then again I have had AOL for 10 years and it has always been a troublemaker.

bedstor- I tried both of your solutions and neither of them worked.

I have a new problem now though. I am on IE for only a few minuets when an error box comes up saying that Explorer has performed an illegal operation. So I click on the link to restore explorer and it takes a couple of minuets for it to do so.

I will try uninstalling 9.0 and reinstalling 8.0 and see if this helps at all.

I really appreciate your help Smile Thank You Very Much.

I will report back and see what happens changing back to AOL 8.0

Thanks ~Heather

If you have had AOL for ten years now, & it has always been a problem, it don't make sence to me why you stay with it.

Get a different Network Program. There are all kinds of them out there, some cheaper than AOL.

Yeah Yeah lol I know. I have had people tell me for years to switch to someone else.

I live on the Oregon Coast and here I have to have a seperate ISP in order to use AOL.(whereas when I lived in Portland, I could sign onto AOL directly, I didnot have to have another ISP)

I go through Centurytel and have DSL. So really in a sense, I could drop AOL altogether and use a free email service such as Yahoo! or hotmail. But I am stubborn and don't want to get rid of AOL. Like I said ealier, I have had it for so long it is like an old reliable. I keep saying one of these days I will have to rid myself of AOL and try someone new but I never do.

Just so you don't lose anything
Uninstall AOL9 and Reinstall 8 in this way
Go to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs
find the AOL entry and delete the program
When it asks to save the files click yes and they are saved to the Desktop
Then get your Aol 8 Cd and pop that in the drive Click on as an existing member then I suggest click the option "updating to a new version" Roll Eyes
Now if all goes to plan when it does load you will have AOL 8 with your files from 9
But...save the Favorites to a PFC file and up load them to a site which you can store your favorite links for free www.linkagogo.com
8 & 9 favorite Pfc files don't mix Confused only place that accepts them is Linkagogo.
Only issue is that once saved they can't be downloaded off that site as an AOL file Frown Ok as IE Favorites and other types. Can export them to there Smile
They are saved as a personalised "Search engine" page Smile in alphabetical order and you can customise it
When you see it Heather, you won't be too bothered about the hassle of moving....
There is a try it yourself page to mess around with Smile
And once you sort out the transfer Method Have to download a small program first
you can do transfers in seconds (duplicates are ignored) Cool
NOTE:I think Catty is using this program (and you know what Catty is like? Wink) She says it is easy
Ps This page can be accessed independently of your AOL browser Smile so if you are on a strange computer you can call up this to pull your site out of store Cool (They allow you up to 3000 links before you pay for space) Smile

escencia,
Have you tried calling AOL, and asking for an 8.0 disc? I'm not familiar with AOl, but they might send one or give you a download link.

Here is a link from Download.com for AOL8
www.download.com/3000-2104-10161733.html
To help you download the entire program
Download this program first http://www.download.com/Download-Accelerator-Plus This will assemble the program faster and you'll be able to stop it and resume it if you have a powercut or something Frown
Does generate an odd popup but it's a million times better than Gozilla (spyware) and it's a download of 265k (takes about 1-2 mins on dial-up) Wink and It is easy to set going all you do is click on the link. Set where to download to. I have made a folder called "Handy files" All the downloads go here and are used as backups if there are any problems Smile Downloading with DAP has been reliable (and it really works well with Broadband Cool)

bedstor- Thank You Thank You Thank You Smile That link for AOL 8.0 was just what I needed! The other program did not work however. I got it DL ok but it froze up when trying to load AOL. So I had to shut the prgoram down in order to DL AOL. But I really really appreciate the link to AOL.

Frtizzs- Thanks so much very much for the offer to send me a CD. Smile That was really very nice of you. I will send you an email here in a bit Smile Thanks!

I hope this solves the most of my problems.

However, since I have taken AOL 9.0 off yesterday, I still have been having minor problems. Like my computer still freezes up sometimes while I am in Internet Explorer but all in all my computer still seems to be running alright Smile

Thanks again, everyone. Your help was more than appreciated Smile

You're welcome Smile

There was no version 8 Posted @ www.Oldversion.com newest there is version 6 which was a buggy version I recall Frown
I think in all you had a bad confict something in your setup did not agree with AOL 9...such as the program was too strong for your computers specifications.Frown
In a few years even the fastest computer now will come across a program it cannot run and someone will post a similar post to yours Roll Eyesand the answer is the same.
Put another way You may have a 1st generation Pentium computer from 1995 it will barely run any program unless the copywright is before 1998 maybe 2000? whereas a computer built after 2002 (3rd Generation Pentium) Might run programs easily dating back to the 80s but is starting to struggle with present day software (yours?) Roll Eyes The latest computers may start to feel slow by as early as 2006? Frown and totally obsolete by 2008? Frown but they still are backwardly compatible with the early software and can run it with slight adjustments. I Have a Game dating back to 1981 Eek (really!) Sound is incompatible graphics are crude, but it was state of the art for that time and it fits into about 550K .You sometimes had to adjust the Memory to make it run (what was it? 640k? Roll Eyes)and it came on a floppy disk.

Well, I hate to say it but...after doing all that, I still have problems.

My computer still freezes up every once in awhile. It seems it can only do one thing at a time. Which sucks.

I have an ad blocker program, Panicware. Well, what happens sometimes, and jsut happened ealier is it freezes up. What I mean is I have to turn it off if I want to post some on ap/dp so the box can come up. otherwise the blocker thinks it is an ad and well blocks it. Well, if I forget to turn my ad blocker off, and click on reply, the box tries to come up, the ad blocker blocks it and sometimes my computer just freezes. I get the blue screen Program is busy thing.

I get the blue screen of death alot too. It has all these numbers and whatnot that I usually check through google.com to see what is causing it. Well, you are supposed to be able to hit any key to get back into windows but I never can. I hit any key and another screen comes up with different numbers. I can hit any key 6 or 7 times and each time geta different set of numbers.

I have one set of numbers I wrote down yesterday that I will have to go check.

Let me go check those numbers and I will be right back.

Mad Google cannot find it. It didn't match any of their searches. Mad

Oh. And as for the ad blocker? I have had it for over a year and have never had any problems with it until now. I don't think it is that program unless another program is conflicting with it.

Oh...and I really do appreciate all your help. It is so much appreciated!!! Smile Smile Smile
