I'm working on 98se with a DSL connection to the internet. My problem is getting update from microsoft. When I go to the site (either by the microsoft update program or typing in the site myself) it doesn't get fully downloaded and then locks up. It's been doing this now for a couple of months and therefore I have not been able to get any updates. This is beginning to concern me.
Does anyone know what may be causing this?

I had this problem --found that if I isable my anti -virus program before beginning Windows Update, all will download properly. Some anti-virus programs tend to block downloads.

Just some info on Win98 I have seem in numerous news groups although I can find nothing on Microsoft sites admitting to this. Win98/Win98SE enters "non-supported" phase on 30 June 2003 and "end of life" on 30 June 2004.

Caveat! Di, I strongly urge you to NEVER disable your anti-virus program when you're connected to the web. You are playing fire and I'd sure hate to see you get burned.

...NEVER disable your anti-virus program when you're connected...
Actually, the firewall is the essential item. This is unrelated to Web browsing, as attacks are generally random and from any compromised machine which is online, so it's important to keep the firewall active.
Some viruses can infect the computer when you simply view an infected Web page, or when a malicious website operator engineers the attack. At a site such as Windows Update, however, it's quite safe to disable the antivirus if it interferes with the update process (don't browse other sites at that time, though, and skip checking your e-mail).
Hi Haterg...: Do as above if your anti-virus is causing the problem.
Another thing to check is: In Internet Explorer, click Tools/ Internet options. Now select the security tab, click the "Trusted Sites" icon then click "Sites" uncheck the box that says "require Server Varification" In the box that says "add this site...", type in http:/www.microsoft.com , click "ADD" then "OK"
Now back here click "Custom Level" in this window make sure the radio button in downloads that says "File Download/ Enable" has a DOT in it. Click "OK" in two places and now try your update download.

Possibly the update software on your computer is damaged. Follow this method to reinstall the software.
Double-click My Computer, Control Panel, and Internet Options, then click Settings and View Objects. Right-click Update Class or {9F1C11AA-197B-4942-BA54-47A8489BB47F}, then click Remove and Yes. Close the windows which were opened.
Click Start, Run, type Regsvr32 /U iuctl.dll and press , then click OK to dismiss the success/fail dialog.
Use Find to locate the files iuctl.dll and iuengine.dll, then right-click each file and click Delete (click Yes if prompted).
