I have a new to me IBM ThinkPad T-41 with XP – Pro. With SP-2. It has wireless and a Lan card. I was having trouble getting on line with my router and modem to my satellite connection. So I go to the shop and it works with their wireless and then we hooked to their Cable connection and it was doing just like it did to me at home. Launch say, IE, and the progress bar would go slowly across about 1/3 of the way and then the 'Can't Connect' page comes up.

All indications and checks show that everything is working. So I click and check and fiddle and at some point it magically worked. Neither I or the shop guy could tell why it started working.

Now this laptop has the IMB connectivity application and all that other 'tom foolery' so I have no clue.

I download Firefox and a few other applications I wanted on it with their 'faster than I have connection' and shut down a few times and in general mess around trying to find a RAM upgrade, but theirs was to many $$$$.

I come home and nada..... Grrrrrrr Same thing, it goes 1/3 and stops just like before. I have a total of 10-12 hours and 60 miles of running around in this and I still can't get on line.

Any help? Anyone else with a T-41? Any ideas?

It seems to me it has to be a setting “SOMEPLACE” ...... It is a “ Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection “.... Ethernet card.... Came as OEM....

Please help .........

No job is too hard for the person who does not have to do it..

You may find it will work better if you allow Windows to manage your wireless connection.

Go to the control panel (in the classic view), then administrative tools, then services, and in the list near the very bottom is Wireless Zero Connection. Turn it to automatic and enable it. Windows will then be used to control the wireless connection.

Also, you can click the "Repair" command and allow windows to repair the connection. More details about this:

repair This assumes the control panel is in the Category View.

Sometimes the problem is in the registry in an entry called "Winsock2". From what you're describing I would not expect this to be the problem, but here is where you can find more information: Repair Winsock2

I hope something here will help.

I am not being clear I guess. The wireless works fine. It worked right off at the shop. I do not have wireless at home. The shop has c cable connection also with a router and that is what eventually I got working with lots of 'fiddling'.

Now at home I have Wildblue satellite and other computers on an in house net work. It works on the network as to seeing the other computers and I took this ping shot from the router which the T-41 sees just fine. I moved the screen shot to this computer to post.
This is the ping I got...

More ideas?
Also did a bit off this page but still no luck.

XP firewall is off.
tried with AVG firewall off and on.
The little 'status' symbol by the clock says all is good.
The IBM thing says all is good.
Device Hardware manager says all is working properly.

Why work on cable LAN and not my satellite LAN? I changed nothing between town and here.

::: grumble, grumble :::

More ideas? I'll try most anything.....

I suggest you contact the IBM technical support people and see what they suggest. Perhaps they can find where the problem is.

If I'm understanding this correctly, you can connect wireless, but not hard-wire? If that's the case, it sounds like a problem with your ethernet card or its driver. Check that driver in your device manager.

In addtion to what Kendor says Reinstall the Router And you'll be remaking the Password too
Have it connected to the Equipment which is giving you trouble and it might recognise it this time ?
Before you do this Disable your Windows Firewall
and Your software firewall and go ahead with the install Now Try going online? Any Luck?

If the answer is yes renable your software firewall ONLY
You'll find in the Security Center that It been given a Green "light" The Windows Firewall
will Help out still...But won't conflict
and messages will be generated by the Software Firewall

It does also say in the Security Center that 2 firewalls is Not a good Idea ...Hence You will get a Block or something Mad

Bottom Line Which all Computer Forums say to a Man DO NOT RELY ON THE WINDOWS FIREWALL ALONE (it is weak)
The Router also has a built-in Firewall and the Password/Serial Number generated Protects the Network ONLY!
Therefore all the Network needs an Individual Software firewall setup to protect it both from itself and the Outside world

PS If you cannot afford a Commercial version
There are some Free Firewalls available
I hear Comodo is the best of the Current crop Take a browse of several more at http://filehippo.com/software/firewalls/
All bar 1 are small download sizes
(Comodo weighs in @ 9 MB)

Read this Topic off a UK Forum and you'll see why the Windows Firewall is NOT Good as a Stand alone and B) They also Touch on the 2 Firewall Clash Red Face

The questioner like you has a new computer and is querying how to make it run with the router

Thanks guys, I did all that and more. I know about the XP firewall, it is disabled.. Big Grin Hours on the phone, IBM, M$, Satellite provider, no joy. Drivers good, all indications say it should work, won't 'ping' though even with getting send receive units in the app window. really strange.

Calling the vendor in the morning, I have it all boxed back up, going to try for a swap in the AM. Will work from there.

I hate to give up but I only have a 7 day window for the return policy.

I'll be back with the results.
