Though I cranked up the Content Ratings in my Explorer Tools, I find that a few offensive sites can still make it through. Not good since the viewer is under 18 (Visiting children).

I would like to make it to where those sites cannot be viewed by anyone. Is there a way to block certain sites other than maxing out the Adult Content bars?

EXAMPLE: Though I cranked up the Adult Content to Partial Nudity and Clothed sexual touching, I find that some sites are still being visited which are well beyond those limits. I would rather just ban particular sites as the History reveals them then tamper too much with my security and content settings.

I have password protected the computer, files and adult controls. I used a new password just in case the old one was known. So I do not think it is a password issue.

Any suggestions for making my PC safer for teenager use would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

David

You'll need to get yourself a specialised program such as Net nanny, but it will cost. IE content advisor was a half hearted attempt at playing Big Brother.

However, you'll find it is virtually impossible to shield them entirely, simply because the web designers for these sites are a bit on the clever side

I have noted in the latest version of Spywareblaster it does seed the blocked IE files list with many XXX sites addresses also the Restricted Sites list Smile
You can tune the content down in searching on several search engines but these controls are found in the Advanced options.
But the general consensus is you cannot block all of it! Frown Mad Block perhaps 8 to 9 out of 10 sites is about the limit? Roll Eyes

Of course, how stupid of me, I should have known that the damn thing that is suppose to make my life easier needs at least three more supporting software packages at the cost of God only knows what which will require about 3 hours of my time EACH to learn how to use with out really messing my machine which would require a whole day of waiting on the phone for a Technical Support Person to get around to me while I listen to Music that is suppose to be easy listening but makes my stomach turn.

(Big, Deep Breath) Well I will not be purchasing Net Nanny. Simply because I do not have kids, I guess I will either have to unplug and hide the plug to the Thing that Sits in the Corner (computer) or just ban the nieces and nephews from coming over. Both are far easier, less expensive than relying upon Computer Companies to do a thing right the first time.

Yes, I am frustrated to the extreme over this simply because lately I have been dumping money into new software, new licenses, new this that and the other to protect a machine which I didn't want in the first place.

Aside from the $1700.00 price tag for the machine, the monitor, the key board, printer, I have also had to spend another $200 in lumber, nails, glue, etc and about 8 hours of time to build a desk, and an accompanying printer/cd/tower holder. Simply because the desks offered are made out of cheap particle board and they wanted $500 and higher for cheap furniture.

Then I had to get a virus protector, spend nearly $75.00 for that and just recently I had to send off a check for another $20.00 to get another year of licenses in order to keep up to date with the viruses that some punk kids are spreading around for "fun".

Then I had to get a fire wall, which the first one really screwed up the system royally because some idiot was trying to get into my computer thinking I was an idiot and would have important personal information on the Thing that Sits in Corner which I trust as far as I can throw, no not even that far, because I can throw it pretty darn far. So about $100 later and another program and about a week of figuring the damn thing out I think I have an operational firewall, I can't be too certain because Computer companies can't make anything easy.

Then there is the upgrades, disk cleaning, defrag and all of that other rot that you have to do because the darn old software can't do it on its own. Then you have to upgrade that damn OS or is that a PDA or is it the Platform? Because Bill Gates keeps on getting some new ideas he wants to try out on the World, yet I find every week I am having to get yet another security update which a few of them have cause a lot of problems which means I get to spend 4 hours waiting on the damn telephone listening to easy listening music waiting for some computer nerd to treat me like I am an idiot because I do not know what a DFA is compared to a ISP because I was born in a time when the only frigging computer you had was a pencil and a piece of paper.

Then I leave to go to work to come home to discover that the Brat has been over to visit (The computer) to surf the net looking for free porn sites, and to view things like Debbie of the Double Endowments who just can't be human I have never ever met a woman that endowed and I have met a lot of people. Sure this may be some teenage boy's wet dream of sexual perfection but to me it is a disgrace and a bit of worry especially since I find that Debbie of the Double Endowments is viewed on a Site which uploads spy ware, and pop-up ads and possibly back doors onto my computer which required my getting the latest Virus protection which is another pain in butt because Most often there is no software to remove the damn thing you have to have a degree in Computer sciences and download an email page of 10 pages that is so complex you end up spending 2 hours reading in the manual before you can start removing the offending bit of software. Then you stand a chance of accidentally removing the wrong thing. Back to waiting on the phone 4 hours for a Computer Nerd who will either a. Not speak english. B. Not understand when you tell them 13+ times, "I am hard of hearing, please speak slowly", Or who treats you like an idiot simply because it is assumed that everyone has a degree in Microsoft Software.

So of course, Explorer will not help me, nor is it designed to work by itself. And of course I have to get Net Nanny or some other Child Guardian Software which will most likely come with a hefty price tag and will require me to spend yet another 4 to 8 hours trying to figure out how the hell it works. Plus I will have to shell out a yearly fee for new licenses for a thing which I, being a gay male with no kids of my own, am having to do simply because my Brother In Law decided to be straight and have several of them.

Mad Mad Mad

Yes I am irked.

David, why don't you tell your nephew that you know he's looking at such sites and that if it continues you'll go to his parents? Or just go to his parents right now?

You shouldn't have to shell out bucks for this- this kid should be embarrassed to be caught looking at such sites at a house that he's a guest in!

Well What can I say other than kids these days..

Actually when confronted I get an innocent "I don't know how that got on your computer, honest I was just checking my email."

We tend to do to family things we would never every contemplate doing to strangers. I guess this is one of them things we do to family who's home we are a guest in.

The idea to increase security and content was a parents' suggestion.

David v. Goliath and Debbie: Why don't you just tell your nephew what you return home to discover and that you do not want to discover some of it, because you are over 21 and do not do such surfing yourself? Or, why don't you just tell your nephew which kinds of sites to avoid, because they put spyware, etc. in your computer?

I'm not necessarily siding with the nephew here - but there are things as Header redirection, embedded e-mail and many other things which can make it appear that he's an avid viewer.. when he's really not.

I'd do a bit more checking before I accuse him of anything. Keep in mind: I could send you an e-mail about something completely harmless - and make it look like you're really into some crazy stuff (by viewing the IE history).

Well that just complicates all of this even more, cause now I am not certain if a "confrontation" is warranted, and now I do not even know if it is wisdom to pull the "I'm telling your Ma" card.

See When I asked this I thought it would be far easier, and more honorable and keep from embarrassing him and making huge waves by just making it impossible for those sites to be reachable from my computer.

So now I am left with the possibility that he is telling the truth when he says "I only checked my mail".

Sledge hammer to the Machine Infernal looks like a viable option at this time.

From personal experience I had my nephew on as a Screen name on my a/c for a while And he was going onto Spywaware site and Teen oriented sites where Spammers hang out..and his Account was Clear yet my Master Name collected Spam and Spyware Galore Mad Confused
I didn't use a Spyware stopper then and was just discovering how to Block Spam .It was about the same Time I discovered Answerpoint Smile learnt a lot from there (What happened to those people? Roll Eyes) Spam was up to 50 items per session spent 10 mins deleting it Frown also getting strange IMs from strangers Confused
Coming up to date Spam is down to 4 items per session Razz Strange IMs are zero Smile
Spyware is in check Razz(have to run a monthly update though) although new ways of disruption are always being tried such as the CoolWebSearch (CWS) hijacker trojan which has no less than 1250 sites blocked in SpywareBlaster Eek (and there'll be more added next month Frown)

I have been getting porn e-mail for the last few days. I seems that some folks know how to get it through the spam blockers. My antique hybrid computer has a little flip-down window with the address box. Now, that's where you should look to see where someone has been recently surfing.

DvdGStwrt,
What version of Windows are you using? Have you thought about setting it up for needing a password to get into the computer at all? Or, if necessary, when you leave, remove the power cords from the computer, and hide them somewhere safe! Be a little creative, and you can keep the brat from being on your pc at all! That would stop the porn sites from being there totally! If the computer cannot power up, it cant be taken to those sites! When you get home, put the cords back in, they are easy to remove after all. Maybe this could help?

I opened a very innocent looking e-mail which contained the Netsky P worm and within seconds my temporary internet files were flooded with porn....mostly Brittany Spears and Eminem. (P must stand for porn). It can happen.

Well this is what I did:

We have XP -

I made an account for Danny, I made an Account for Me. We both have administration abilities, pass word protected. Guest is not password protected.

I maxed out the Explorer - You can't even get here without clearance. Everything is limited in its use.

As soon as the computer goes to screen saver (17 minutes after the last use) the entry is through the profiles.

It seems to be working.
