I haven't asked a computer question in a long while, but KNOW some of you know the answer...

I am running Windows XP w/ high-speed connection. I keep getting promted to download the new IE 7. I have done so twice. Both times I removed it using the "quick restore to an earlier date" feature because A) it slowed things WAY down and B) I did not like the "improved" look/features AT ALL!

What I'm requesting is either to learn how to download it and have it be FAST, at least as fast as IE 6 OR to learn how to get rid of the "New Downloads Are Available For Your Computer" prompt in the bottom tray that keeps wanting me to download IE 7 again.

I have upgraded to IE 7 and OK the layout is Different All the Same things are there (albeit moved slightly) .Has a better favorites handling method than the Previous version
and the Change over is Smooth

I think its worth doing plus grabbing the Windows updates too ,that's what the "Nag "message means The 2nd Tuesday of the Month is when the Windows Updates are posted and the yellow shield is displayed in the tooltray as a Prompt

I find it just as fast as the IE6 page

So why is yours slooow?! Probably is overdue a defrag? That will restore a bit of speed ...

But The best way of restoring Performance is to go to www.ccleaner.com and Download install Crap Cleaner....Horrible name but It does give your old useless files the Heave Ho ready for a Defrag then Your computer will be running at normal or faster speeds again once the Clutter has Gone ...Clears the Registry too ...And it is Ok for a beginner Only job you Have to do is untick the cookies and history files boxes before you "scan" Will take a while on the first go and when the list is produced click the "Run cleaner" button

As I say running a Defrag afterwards Is a good idea...Actually it won't take too long I've got it down to Half an Hour on XP after running Crap Cleaner Otherwise it takes almost double that time
PS The Windows Cleaner program leaves a lot behind and is very slow sometimes


The order I'd do this in is
1) Install Crapcleaner,run it.
2) Run a Defrag,
3) Get the Updates and then
4) Install IE7 offline

If IE7 is running slowly, click into the Tools menu and choose the "Manage Add-ons" command. You may have to right click in the area where the menu would be and choose "Menu Bar" to see the Tools menu.

Disable any add-ons that you don't normally use. This will speed up the IE browser.

You can disable the "phishing" security tool. In the Tools menu, click the Phishing Filter command. That will speed up the browser.

For what it is worth, in my setup which also is connected to a broadband Internet connection, I notice very little speed change with IE 7. I wonder if there is something else going on here.

One possible cause for the slow down is the need to update MS Office. If you have MS Office installed, you can use the Microsoft Update to update all MS products, or you can manually update Office in the Help menu of any Office product, "Office Update" or "Office Online" links. This will install updated service packs which can make a significant speed increase.

If you wish, you can Hide upates that you don't want. In the Windows update page: (from MS Windows Update help)

Hide and restore updates. If you are offered an update that, for any reason, you don't want to install, you can hide it. This means that your list of available updates will display new updates only when you visit the Web site. If you decide to install hidden updates later, click Restore hidden updates and then you can choose from all available updates.

Thanks for the tips. Crap cleaner did clean out some useless files. I ran defrag and re-installed IE 7. Same thing. SLOW, SLOW, SLOW. I do not have MS Office, per se, but do have MS works. There are no available updates.

Perhaps it's the SBC-Yahoo connection, as it is REALLY, REALLY slow. Anything on the Internet is slow, but SBC initializes the slowest. It even locks up. With IE 6, it's fine. For the third time, I used System Restore to return to that version.

Any more ideas? I'm about to give up.

By the way, you don't have to use the System Restore to uninstall IE7.0. If you go to the Control Panel, Add-Remove Programs applet and look for the Entry "Windows Internet Explorer" you can click the "Change or Remove" button. Choose "Uninstall".

This action will uninstall Windows Internet Explorer, version 7.0 and revert back to the original version of IE 6.0, with the latest version 6.0 updates.

Using the System Restore will have put back the Registry items removed by your Registry Cleaner program.

Having said all of this, I still think the problem is something other than just the Windows Internet Explorer 7.0 installation. Did you undo the "Phishing" Tool and disable unused Add-ons as described above?

Did you look at your computer manufacturer's site support information to see if there are any Windows Internet Explorer 7.0 update requirements? I know with the Gateway and e-Machines systems "BigFix" tool, there is a patch that must be installed or the BigFix tool will not run correctly with IE version 7.0. Perhaps your system has some type of similar patch needed. If you will provide us the make and model of your system, we may be able to help find out if there is a patch or some sort available.

Do you have Internet connections options other than the SBC-Yahoo connection? If not or if you'd rather stay with them, have you contacted the SBC-Yahoo technical support desk for assistance with this? They may know of some special requirement needed to work with the new Web browser.

Another area which causes slowdown is the Startup List. Having too many things running here can slow things down sharply

Clues... Look at how many Icons are showing by the Clock ....These are running all the time.
Try "exiting" a few see if that make a difference?. Especially those which scan as soon as you log on Antivirus Programs, Need to reschedule these to a weekly scan somewhere late in the day at the weekend ?
The Edit control is in the Run Box on the Start Menu Type Msconfig and Click on the Startup tab on the next window then untick those you think are causing the Slow down.NOTE ..Common Startup Items are Mostly OK to GO OK
And check the Task manager on the Processes Tab click on the Column header so that the Highest percentage program is at the top of the list There may be a clue there as to what is showing things down
Check the Applications Tab If there is a lot of running programs here that needs addressing ASAP !
