The main PC has a cable connection (OS is Windows XP). The second computer is a HP dv6100 notebook which is linked to the main PC via Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router. The OS on the notebook is Windows XP Media Edition. The notebook is unable to find the printer which is attached to the main PC. The computer guy (who just left after 2 1/2 hours of working trying to set all this up) could not figure out why. Anyone have any ideas?

Is the printer set up to be shared? In your main computer (the one with the attached printer)

See this picture

Open the Control Panel --> Printers and Faxes, then right click on your printer. Choose "Sharing" and verify the printer is set to be shared.

Have you run the Add Hardware wizard which can be found in the Control Panel?..and have you a driver disk for this Printer?

Question to Dwight Am I right in assuming that Both computers have to have the Printer driver installed? Not 1 ?

If this present, running this program makes Windows "see" the Printer and will activate it Smile ps DO Remember to turn the printer on!

Do either of the machines have a software firewall (such as Windows XP's Firewall) running? (No, I'm not talking about your router's firewall!)

You could try temporarily disabling the software firewall(s), and attempt to connect to the shared printer. If you're successful, then you'll know that you need to reconfigure your firewall to allow File & Printer Sharing.

Also helps if your computers are set to the same workgroup. (MSHOME, or WORKGROUP are common)

Hope this was helpful.

The printer is finally working off the remote notebook (wireless network) THANKS TO ALL who have responded with suggestions. A little of this one, a little of that one and lo and behold the notebook finally recognized the printer. THANK YOU ALL!
