Do you know of an free online site which which checks for grammar and spelling. I need something that will detect if I have too many spaces between words or the wrong tense. The best online spell checker I have found is Orangoo.
(Just thought I would share that one with you Smile)
I really need a grammar checker.

Any ideas?

Just a quick thought...you can write your posts in MS Word and use the language / grammar tool. Once complete, just copy/paste the text into your online page.

WordPerfect has a program: "Grammatik", which has grammar and spelling correction.

I don't have WordPerfect. Maybe there is a Mozilla grammar extension.

For a totally free word processor that has all the functions of Word, including an excellent spell checker, grammar aid and thesaurus, try OpenOffice. It's got a lot more than a word processor, too. Go to www.openoffice.org.

I just checked on grammar, and she's fine. She says to check back next week, and bring some Miracle Whip.

I would suggest that you get MS Word or even Office, which has Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint included. If you buy the Student - Teacher version of Office, it will cost about $130.00. These are usually available at Wal-Mart, Best Buy, CompUSA, etc.

You can also buy used versions of Office (or just Word) at used computer stores, Garage sells, Ebay, etc. I would suggest you avoid any that are listed as OEM or that have OEM in the product ID, since these disks are designed to be run only in the computer that they were sold with.

You can buy any version of Office (or Word) going back to Office 97. If you get a version older than Office 2003, you can download a free reader program from Microsoft to view files created in newer versions. If you need to edit the file, you can save it and then open in your version: Microsoft Office Reader - Converter

I'm not sure of the status of the Grammar checker being created for OpenOffice, but here is a link where you can read about it: OpenOffice Grammar-English

Finally, I'm sure you're aware of the Spell Checker for Internet Explorer, but if not, here is a link: iespellcheck It doesn't do grammar checks, but it is a good spell checker that allows you to add in words to customize your dictionary to fit your needs.

Thanks Dwight. I have another hard drive but I just need to switch over. I usually don't use IE. I have been running Mozilla Firefox for the past couple years now. Although I do have IE on here, I rarely use it.

I'm sorry Clare - I must have been misinformed. It appears that the implementation of a Grammar Checker is a future project for OpenOffice.org
Frown
OpenOffice Projects
But if you click on the above link the article references several free grammar checkers. Maybe one of those will help.

I'm not sure that I follow this...does your other hard drive have a word processor program on it?

I have Word, and while its spellcheck is pretty reliable, the grammar part has a few shortfalls. I doubt you will be able to find a grammar check online that you will agree with 100%. In real life, grammar is flexible. I suggest you get Strunk's little book and study it.

You might be successful using google docs. Simply type "Google docs" in a search engine and it should come up. There, you can open a free account and use a spreadsheet to spell check your documents. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Catty's suggestion of getting Strunk & White's Elements of Style is an excellent one. It works as a perfect text for grammar classes from about 6th grade until at least sophomore level in college. In many cases, it is the only text needed.

The Full Text of the 1918 Edition of Elements of Style
