This was originally going to be a Popup Mad reduction/prevention tip but found some extra things.
I did post a similar tip a while back but I did find there are settings deep in Windows XP that do this and More (Not Registry).I think these are more effective Cool
Where they are located are in the "Services" program But... like the Registry you have to know what does what? so don't go and alter anything unless you know what it will do Roll Eyes
Ok click on Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools.
Look for the "Services" short cut icon...(cogs)
New window opens ...looks like the "Task Manager"
Should have Services(local) as banner?
If there is any other name then post a question on how to change? I don't know if there are others?
OK look down the list for item marked "Messenger"(might not be in XPpro?)
This controls the Popups display on the Desktop (maybe more?)
Located it? then look across for the column marked "Startup Type" this wll say Automatic/Manual or Disabled?
If it is "Disabled" then no action is needed Smile
To switch it over, click on the item and on the box that comes up there is a menu box in the middle marked "Startup Type" move the setting to "Disabled" then press the Apply then OK buttons to Save (at bottom of box)
The other 2 programs which warrant attention (To Disable) are the entries called:
Routing and Remote Access(Remote Access)
Human Interface Device Access (HIDSERV)
Title explains itself...
BTW Click on the columns to sort Items
Works best when viewed as "Detail". Click on View(Window menu) and select "Detail" from list

HIDServ supports hotkeys and buttons for keyboards, mice, remote controls, USB audio and other devices. There is a hoax circulating which says HIDServ.exe is a hacker tool which collects and passes on information, but this is completely false.

HIDServ.exe is installed only when a device requiring it is detected. It is safe to disable, but you may lose some functionality with some devices.
