First, you get a hotmail.com account or .net passport.
Once the program downloads and installs (and this is very simple to do, with instructions at the site), you click the "Tools" menu and start setting up contacts. It is very easy to use and you will have no trouble figuring out the steps.
You can also go to the Yahoo home page and do the same thing. I think it is a little better than MSN's instant message service. Well, you could have both!
Matter of opinion, but I prefer MSN. Yahoo is EXTREMELY crash prone and is a real RAM hog. It does, however, allow you to use the mass chaos Yahoo Chat zoo directly through it, which is an improvement over the browser based version. I have both myself, but for basic instant messanging, MSN is much more stable.

I personally use yahoo's instant messenger, but that's just because it's the one my e-buddies use.
When you're choosing an instant messenger, you should consider what your friends are using, because one of the features is that you add your friends to your messenger list, and you can see instantly whether they're on line when you log in. The trouble is if you're using msn and they're using yahoo, you can't add them to your list.
