I'm not really sure if this is the right area for this question but I was unsure exactly where to post it. I want to burn cd with with various artists and songs. I have all the cd's at home (which I purchased). Plain and simple I want to make a copy of certain songs from multiple cd's onto one cd and give a copy to a friend. Is this illegal? I certainly don't want to do it if it is.

Yes, burning is completely legal. I couldn't find something about it in my little searches in Dodge's magazines. Here's some more on it though.

Those artists that they list is very much barely scraping the surface of artists that offer free downloads, by the way. More likely, that's the number of artists who don't offer free full songs to download on their websites. You'd be hard pressed to not find a popular modern artist especially who doesn't offer at least some free songs to download.

The giving it to a friend part makes it clearly illegal. When you purchase the song, The physical CD is only a small part of what you are paying for. You pay for a copy for yourself, not multiple copies for other people.

There are, however, often songs available from bands websites that you can burn to CDs legally, as Jusork says.
