Seems every time I download something from Yahoo...i.e. an application to make webcam work or a new version of IE..I get this pop-up that won't go away! The url is:
http://nztv.untd.com/webads/53168/emd720x300pop.
gif

and it is an ad for Phoenix University or EarnMyDegree.com
I use IE6 or FireFox. Both are set to block pop-ups. All my toolbars have pop up blockers on them. I've run massive virus checks (Ad-Aware, Spybot, AVG) and nothing is found. It doesn't matter what browser I use, it appears. I can close out of the pop-up and seconds later it appears again. I've searched for a hidden file on my hard-drive, no luck. I've set all my internet options to block Java, block images from loading, clean out history and temp files. Still appears. I dont even have to have a browser open...it will appear on my desktop.

Any idea how to get rid of it? My operating system is Microsoft XP and I use IE 6 as my default. Oh and yes, I have done system restores and it still appears. And there is nothing in my add/remove programs that shouldn't be there.

Edited to correct image size

It is blocked on My computer By what program?

Avast!,AdAware,Spywareblaster? or Windows Defender

Try this for starters Download /install CCleaner from www.ccleaner.com (tiny download)
Some Screen shots on this link
Run both the Cleaner scan (untick the Cookies box And history boxes on the left side)
Then run the Issues scan(Blue icon) this cleans the Registry (Very safe) and refuse the backup offer OK?
Next do a reset
Any change?

The only other option is to post a Hijack This Log onto a specialist forum and follow the instructions to the letter and It will take several posts to remove the culprit

And DO Not Post asking Have I got a Clear log as your First posting a description of the Link as you have posted here Helps locate the area in the log where it may be sitting?
This is the HJT Log Forum off the UK site where I post as you can see the Logs are very long and complex...and ticking the wrong box can prove disastrous! Expert Country

There are instructions for the download of this program and How to post on the Top (pinned)posting
PS Their success rate is very high
Have to sign up to post
Reply may be slow Due to the Number of queries
But they will get around to you

Geogia, we can also connect our systems and I will run the Highjackthis directly. You can contact me via my site at http://dwightblackburn.com
You can download the highjackthis.zip file on my site by clicking the Spyware link on the front page.

What is this "hijack this" site you two seem to know about? Gosh, I didn't think it would be so complicated to remove a little pop-up. Thanks you two. I will look into these options tomorrow when I have some time to play arond with it. I will keep posted Smile

HighJackThis (that is how it is spelled, all one word) isn't a site, it is a utility program that, when run, will show you all of the services and programs that are currently running on your system. It will automatically create a "log" file if allowed that can be sent to specialty sites where people trained to deal with them can advise you what to remove. Since in your case you've already run the necessary scans (ad-aware, spybot, etc.), it should be relatively simple to locate any "stray" entries that should be removed. See this large picture If this picture is too small to read, click on it to allow larger size.

Those items that are identified as "bad" can be selected and removed, including their registry entry.

HJT will usually find the type of hidden nuisance popup that you're dealing with here. If not, then we know we need to get an even bigger weapon!

As stated above, you can download the program from my site, via the Spyware link. This program can cause a ton of problems though if things that should not be removed are tampered with, so it is suggested that it be run only by or under the direction of an expert.

Here is a Google search result page with addresses of sites where you can upload the log page: Google search The TechSupport site (first result) and the Lavasoft site (third result) would be good choices. I'm sure there are others, though I only looked quickly at these results. And as stated above, I can do for you, too, either "live" or via email. Be cause of the size and complexity of these log files, I don't usually recommend uploading these logs here a AP, though that could be done, too.

Looks like the popup came from Netzero. By chance are you using Netzero/Juno free dialup service or webmail?

Actually I was using a wireless signal from comcast cable...

I dont know what happenend but the day after I posted this problem my computer totally stopped working. So I ended up buying a top of the line Hewlett Packard, with a 3 year accidental warranty. I figured since I have such horrid luck with computers I was going to really invest in a good one and cover it so that I will be guaranteed a working computer for 3 years.

So that's why I haven't been here for awhile...but thanks guys for all your help Smile
