I'm using a "Hosts" file popup blocker and it blocked the link to the Google toolbar! Sibling rivalry? Anyway, I disabled the hosts file and took a look at the Google toolbar. It looks good, but I'd advise caution when considering installing any "Beta" software. Beta in "computerize" means "test". The developer is still working on the program and there might still be bugs in it that need to be worked out. Sometimes these bugs can cause serious damage to computer setups. I make it a policy to only run Beta programs on a backup computer that itself is completly backed up if the worst happens (total system crash). I really like Google and while I personally don't use their toolbar, this one is tempting. I have the Google Advanced Search in my Favorites Links, but when the testing phase is complete, I may well install this toolbar. Thanks for the link, Bazcaz. Just curious about your username. What does it mean? Dwight

Dwight: I tried the instructions at Gorilla Designs: - Downloaded their Hosts file.
- Unzipped it into a temporary folder.
- Opened my original Hosts file.
- Opened the new Hosts file.
- Copy/pasted the list from Gorilla Designs into my original Hosts file.
When I went to close my original Hosts file, the only option, to keep my changes, was to save it as a text file. Renaming it didn't help. Will this work-around serve? - I deleted the .txt file I ended up with.
- Replaced my original Hosts file from the backup I'd put on a floppy.
- Renamed my original Hosts file to "AHosts."
- Moved the one I downloaded from Gorilla Designs to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC.
I now have two "Hosts" files - Hosts and AHosts (my original one). Is this going to work, with 2 Hosts files? Also, I'd like to make a couple changes to my original Hosts file (to get access to a site that ended up blocked), but how do I get around it wanting to save as a .txt file? I'm running WinXP Pro. Thanks, dearest Master.

Update: I cut/pasted my Hosts files to my desktop and was able to access the site I wanted. This will require that I cut/paste them back into their directory home. I'll do this if there's no other way around it, but hope you've got a better solution, for me, Dwight. Awfully bulky, and NOT elegant, way to work around it. Pretty please? LOL

Hello there Sonnet26! First, did you see this page in the Hosts instruction page for Windows XP Pro WinXP? This FAQ explains changing hosts.txt to hosts: hosts name changeWhen I put in my hosts file, I first deleted the existing C:\Windows\hosts file, then copy pasted the downloaded unzipped host file into C:\Windows. The host file can't have any file extension, it is just "hosts". You can edit the host file using Wordpad. To open it you can set the "Files of type" box at the bottom of "Open" window to "All Files". A much better method, though is to install the Hosts Toggle. You can get the hosts toggle here.If you should decide you don't want the hosts file, just open it in Wordpad, delete all the entries, then click File/Save. It will revert back to the way it was. But how can I turn off Google POPUP Blocker or go back to the old bar. My normal blocker is not working anymore. And how does Google know to allow this post popup window and not the rest. Anyway I like THIS one so much. EMS Free Surfer Companion
is shareware and
EMS Free Surfer mk II
is totally freeware which is what I use. Blocks everything or has an allow list also. ivnj

ivnj: I've got the Google toolbar, but I've disabled everything (in Toolbar Options...) because I only want quick access (via the dropdown menu) to Advanced Search and Images. My version (1.1.70) of the Google Toolbar doesn't have a popup stopper feature, but I haven't bothered to upgrade since I really don't want all the extra features (including the tracking one). You probably have one of the 2.0.86, .87 or .88 BETA versions, which is probably the whole problem. Beta's are notorious for bugs, that end up getting worked out later. You might want to uninstall it, for now, and reinstall 1.1.70...at least, until they come out with a FINAL version, which should have all the bugs worked out of it. You can still get version 1.1.70 here: Essence PC (translated French site). Click here for the direct download: Google Toolbar v.1.1.70. N.B. You are SUPPOSED to uninstall previous versions of the Google Toolbar, BEFORE you install newer ones. You can't install upgrades over the one you already have. If you still have an older version of the Toolbar, that, also, may be your problem. Your only other option would be to disable the Google Toolbar altogether (View > Toolbars, then uncheck the Google). I've got Panicware's PopUp Stopper Pro (got it free from my ISP) and it's attached as a toolbar with buttons to turn it on/off and a one to immediately add a site to allow popups (such as AP). Nothing wrong with EMS Free Surfer (I tried it when you suggested it awhile ago), but I really prefer what I have now.
