I installed IE 5.5SP2 according to the instructions TomGL2 gave me. The instructions were in the post he made to my Internet Explorerquestion (last post on 8-23-02).

He instructed me to check the version numbers.

About[B/B] in IE Help says 5.50.487.2300[B]IC - Down at the bottom of description, it says this is a customized version. Tom had suggested this as a possibility of being a trojan horse or spyware version. However, IEXPLORE.EXEdoes say 5.51.4807.2300, as he said it should.

Do I have a safe version?

I renamed WEXTRACT(version 6.00.2600.000 -- it is 496KB -- to ie6setup.exe. However, this is the only icon on the desktop relating to IE. There is no ie5setup.exe icon on desktop.

Search for ie*setup.exe revealed the following files:

ie6setup.exe C:\Windows\Desktop
ie6setup.exe C:\Windows\Windows Update Setup Files\
ie6setup.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer
ie6setup.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer
IE5SETUP.exe C:\My Documents\MHP\REDIST\IE5
ie6setup.exe C:\ie6setup
ie5setup.exe C:\Windows\Windows Update Setup Files

What do you suggest?

Becky, I'm confused. To install IE 5.5 SP2, you must have downloaded ie5setup.exe. If you could not find this program after the download, how did you run it to install IE 5.5?

You appear to have 2 ie5setup.exe files. The one located in the C:\Windows\Windows Update Setup Files folder is likely the legitimate file downloaded from Microsoft.

Right-click this file and click Properties, Digital Signatures and, under "Name", double-click Microsoft Corporation. You should see "This digital signature is OK". Under "Counter signatures", double-click VeriSign Time Stamping Service. You should see "This digital signature is OK".
