To Tom (or anyone else):

This relates to your answer to my last post of Unsuccessful Java download from Stuttgart U(8/25/02).

I should mention that I used Norton System Check about a week ago. It found and fixed over 100 files, but there were some it asked me how I wanted to fix them. I wasn't sure what to do.

Today I tried to follow your instructions:

  • After using the RNav.exe removal tool instructions for computers with other Norton products loaded, I reinstalled NAV 2000.
  • When downloading the 20020823-004-i32.exe file, I got a message "2002 etc. has caused an error in (unknown). 2002 etc. will now close."
  • When I used Symantec's online virus scan, it said 0 files were infected.

I did Norton System Checkagain. The files it found it wanted me to choose how to fix were:

  • The key, "NavLuFile\DefaultIcon, refers to a missing icon. 1)Delete Invalid Registry entry or 2) Open Registry Editor to correct the problem by manual editing of the registry.
  • The key, "CLSID\{FFD709F0AF39-11D2-B854-0000F81E8872}," refers to an invalid application identifier. The choices were the same as the first error.
  • The key, "SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Application Paths\VCSETUP.EXE," refers to an invalid application path, "C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\{FT5-6~1\VCSETUP.EXE." 1) Fix invalid Registry with file "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\LiveReg\VcSetup.exe." Fixes invalid Registry with file "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\LiveReg\VcSetup.exe file version 2.1.5.1502. 2) Fix invalid Registry entry with file:"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\LiveAdvisor\VcSetup.exe." Fixes invalid Registry entry with file:"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\LiveAdvisor\VcSetup.exe vers. 2.0.0.840. 3) Delete invalid Registry entry

Could these errors be causing the problem?

Thanks for your help.

Possibly there is still a virus in the system, which is interfering with the virus scan. Disable NAV and download Eicar's standard antivirus test file (the file contains no virus), then reenable NAV. Do a system scan. If Norton does not identify the eicar.com file as virus, then the virus scanner is NOT WORKING.

If you are able, download the virus definitions file to the Desktop. Double-click My Computer and the C: drive icon, then click File, point to New, and click Folder. Rename the folder to VDEFS, then close the window.

Click Start, Run, type C:\Windows\Desktop\20020826-016-i32.exe /extract C:\VDEFS, then press Enter and click OK. This extract the definitions to the VDEF folder.

Put the Norton Antivirus CD in its drive, then restart the computer. The system should boot from the CD (if not, a BIOS setting must be changed). Run a virus scan from the CD, using the VDEFS folder for virus signatures.

Rather than booting from the Norton CD, let me give you a better method. Use find to locate NAVDX.EXE on the CD, and note the folder name. If you do not have a Windows Startup disk, create one via Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Startup Disk. You'll need a 3½" 1.44MB floppy.

Delete the temporary Internet files. Right-click the Internet Explorer icon, click Properties, then click Delete Files, OK, and OK.

Put the startup disk in its drive, remove any disks from the CD drives, and restart the computer. The system should boot from the floppy. When prompted, choose "Start computer with CD-ROM support". Type on one line

C:\Windows\Command\Deltree /Y C:\Windows\Tempor~1

This will remove any remaining temporary Internet files left by Internet Explorer. The reason for deleting them is that NAVDX would spend an enormous amount of time scanning them.

Note that the CD drive letter(s) will be one higher than normal. Put the Norton CD in the drive, and type on one line

drive&path\NAVDX /A /PROMPT /CFG:C:\VDEFS /LOG C:\Navdx.Log /DOALLFILES

drive+1&path is the drive (one letter higher) and folder where you found NAVDX.EXE (e.g., E:\Nav9x). Here are the options I used in the command line:

/A -- Scan all hard disks
/Prompt -- for each infected file, ask what action to take
/Cfg: -- specify the virus definitions folder
/Log -- record actions in this file
/DoAllFiles -- scan all files

If you also want to scan the files within compressed files, add /ZIPS after /DoAllFiles. Be patient: The scan may take an hour or two.

Because of these and other problems you are having with your computer, it is apparent that some important files are missing or corrupt. It may be necessary to reinstall Windows to resolve this.

I must be getting forgetful. Type C:\Windows\SMARTDRV, before C:\Windows\Command\Deltree /Y C:\Windows\Tempor~1. This will significantly speed up the Deltree and Navdx operations.

I also omitted a Navdx switch. Use the command drive&path\NAVDX /A /PROMPT /CFG:C:\VDEFS /LOG C:\Navdx.Log /DOALLFILES /S+. Without /S+, subdirectories will not be scanned.
