We just switched from dial-up to DSL and I get a lot of "page cannot be displayed" messages. I seem to have to reload a number of times to get the page to display. I'm having the same problem when I reply to posts...I've had to re-do my replies several times.

Do I need to tweak my IE options or my script?

Have you tried deleting the Temporary Internet Files folder? Sometimes that gets to full.

In I.E. click "Tools", then Internet Options.

Click the "Delete" button.

If that doesn't help, you might try the Internet Explorer Repair Tool.

Click Start
Click Run
Type:
msinfo32
In the Microsoft System Information Window, click "Tools"
Then click "Internet Explorer Repair Tool".

Check the "Repair" option and allow it to attempt to repair the I.E. installation.

Note: You can also get to this tool by going into the Control Panel, then "Add-Remove Programs". Select Microsoft Internet Explorer, then the "Remove" button.

If you don't see the Repair Tool, try going to the Internet Explorer Home page and getting a newer version.

I.E. Home Page

I hope this helps!

Thanks Dwight, but that didn't help; I don't think those tools are available in WinXP. I have noticed the DSL connection flucuates an awful lot - shuts down then starts back up. I'll have to contact MSN and see if their tech support have any answers.

Okay, I didn't know that WinXP doesn't have the I.E. Repair Tool option. This page offers two procedures that may help.

Here is a Browser Tune page from Fred Langa that you may wish to try. I have run both the short and complete tests and found them useful.

Browser Tune

Note: the "Complete" test sequence is not completed yet, though the first part can be run.

To start the repair tool manually, click Start and Run, then type

[for Internet Explorer 5]

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

[for Internet Explorer 6]

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

"IE5Maintenance" or "IE6Maintenance" must be entered exactly as it appears, caps and lowercase.

Thanks for all the suggestions, but I think the problem is with MSN DSL...almost got "there" with them tonight, but not quite. I'll call them again tomorrow.

Grrrrrrr!

Sonnet, don't expect any help from MSN support. They only give those first-level people a few hours of training, they're all from India, and what they tell you will mess you up. I called 5 times about being unable to open favorites, and they told me every time to uninstall and reinstall. By the time I had done that five times my 'puter was so messed up I have to have the repair man.

They are idiots. Call them if you must, but don't let them tell you to uninstall/install ANYTHING!

I know that in this situation, this isn't relevant. But I wanted to put this link here for future reference.

Since MSN piggybacks on IE, maybe this will be helpful...

Try opening IE Options (aka "Internet Properties"),
Go to the connections tab.
Click the "Lan Settings" button
Try checking or unchecking "Automatically detect settings"
Click OK.
Click Ok.

Thanks everyone, for all your suggestions. Apparently there may be a little conflict between the internal firewall in the router, and the DSL modem. After several calls to MSN tech support, both my roommate and I can connect directly to the DSL modem and operate problem free. Our trouble comes when we network the DSL service through the router.

Next call is to the router tech support to see what's what - they are SO lucky I have the patience of Job, LOL.

Thanks again

It ain't happenin' without the router. If you want to connect 2 PCs to the DSL modem, you're going to need a router, switch, or hub. I was told that MSN only supports "SysLink" ('course, mine's "D-Link") so I'm going to call the D-Link tech support, again. Worse comes to worse, and much as it pains me to do so, I'll purchase a SysLink router and MAKE MSN make it work. Otherwise it's back to dial-up. Slow, but problem free.

D-Link makes the most stable router I've used to date with a print server and 4 Ethernet ports DI-704P.

S, if your router is not by D-Link give one a try. I baught a cheap Siemns SpeedStream 4 port with print server $30 at CircuitCity. Had to return it twice and tech support had no clue either. The D-Link was only $63 at CDW. So stable I barely ever have to reset it compared to every five minutes with the cheap one.

I DO have a D-link router, but there seems to be a conflict that won't allow a stable DSL connection between the 2 PCs. I'll address it with D-link tech support.
