Bedstor- I ran scandisk and left for a few hours. I came back to find the blue screen of death.

It said Fatal Exception Error 0028:C00079C0 in VXD VMM(01)+ 000068C0

I looked it up on Google and found out that it is caused by Norton 2003. I used to have that but it caused too many conflicts with my computer so I had to take it out. I found out that even though you may do the proper uninstall for Norton, it sitll leaves behind bits and pieces of files. One person said the only way to get rid of it is to reformat.

David- Yes WIN98 is old. My hardware is all newer like 2000 and newer with my motherboard and CPU being 2003. My dad has Windows ME and I did have it on my computer at one time. However, I play 'The Sims' games and those aren't compatiable with that game. Only Win95,98 and XP are.

I have never seen XP on a computer so I don't know if I wouldl ike it or not. But I might have to break down and buy it.

Thanks Smile

Yes , win 98 is old, but it is still a very , very good program...

AOL 9 is also very good, but not with 98....

Norton: I have NEVER liked Norton one ioda.. It really screwed up my computer... McAffe is not much better...AVG by grisoft is great...

Do not try XP unless you have a newer computer, and then use AOL 9, and with these two, its a winning combo.....ME has problems up the ying yang... It is also not too compatable with 98....

And I'll say it again: Go into Safe Mode to defrag.....

I tried running scandisk and the disk defragmenter. (yes, in safemode)

Both of them got only a very small percentage of the way through when the blue screen of death came up.

I ran scandisk and the first time it gave me:
0167: BFFAADOB
I tried looking that up and found nothing.

I ran it again and got
Fatal Exception Error 0028:C00079C0 in VXD VMM(01)+ 000068C0 (as I mentioned yesterday)

I ran disk defragmenter and got
Fatal Exception Error 0028:C00079C0 in VXD VMM(01)+ 000068C0 Again!

But I cannot run the necessary programs to help my computer because of this. I don't know what else to do.

Thanks Smile

Did you ever try the pcpitstop thing? It is on the second page of answers. It is simple, safe and free. It has always helped me. It might not solve your problem, but it won't hurt anything.

The Sims!!! Yes! They are so much fun. Now I center my attention on SimCity4/Rush hour.

Xp is good, very few problems. I thought I would hate it and did, the first week, it was change, Dave hates change - But now I have to say its the best darn thing Bill Gates has ever put out. I guess it took several versions of Windows to get it right.

Wink

You can see demonstrations at compuer stores, they will let you play with it (if they think you may buy it) on their computers.

I went to one store, bothered and pestered them, then went to another to get the same system cheaper.

David

I keep thinking 98 got 98 on the breain, oh, becasue I have been doing battle with the parents machine lately Roll Eyes

As I was doing something on my computer, I got another blue screen. I wrote down the numbers and hit enter. Another screen came up but with different numbers.

I looked both numbers up. I got nothing for the first set. I looked up the second set. Someone else had the same blue screen and another person suggested to them that it could be their memory. They said to try taking the RAM sticks out and putting them back in.

Someone else said it could be Macafee anti-virus. Well, that one got me thinking because I used to have Macafee but had to take it out because it conflicted with my computer. But I think what I need to do is go into regedit and completely take it out.

I asked my dad about this and he said he doesn't think it could be the memory because if your memory was bad, when you booted up, you would have an error message in DOS and your computer would beep beep beep.

I don't know.

You said that maybe you'll go out and buy XP...

Why ??

I just brought a brand spanking new Compaq for $400 buckos.... Came with XP and other good programs.... If you buy XP to install, it cost you $199 at Office Depot, more in other stores... And don't use McAffe or Norton....
