I've been using free dail up for the past five years because I'm connected through the local college where a family memeber works. It has its advantaged, like complete pop up and virus protection, but its also agonizingly slow. I'm looking into getting NetZero or Netscape or something really cheap like that, and it seems good to me, but my mom is talking about how they can charge long distance or something... I have no idea what she's talking about... anyone have any clue?

If the service does not have a local telephone number available for your dial-up, then long distance charges could apply. You can download their software and during the setup, it will look for an available local telephone number. If it doesn't find one, cancel the install to avoid long distance charges.
One thing...dialup service speed depends upon many factors. The speed of your modem and the quality of the phone line as well as many other things. Generally, all ISP's will have about the same connection speeds. You can purchase a "shielded" phone cable that in many cases will speed your data transfer speed slightly. Belkin makes a good one:
After over 5 years using AOL, I just switched over to NETSCAPE and am very pleased with its performance... I find that it is even faster than AOL, and its mail room is easy to use... In a lot of respects AOL is better, but not for the price....

Funny I came across this thread. I just recently bought a new computer and switched my ISP to Netscape. It's cheap and has given me no problems. It doesn't bombard you with alot of ads and popups like some of the other cheap ISPs do. I would certainly recommend it.
