We're getting this message a lot on Internet Explorer at present. We seem to be connected (the little green computers are there), but we can go nowhere.
When this happens, there's nothing for it but to disconnect and try again - sometimes up to five times (any more than that and we just give up for a while).
Does anybody have any idea what's going on with this? Is it our problem or a problem with the ISP?
(I did a search and found Dwight's suggestion of using the Internet Explorer Repair Tool. But how do you know if anything's been repaired?)
Sorry to be a noodle, but I don't understand this machine at all!

I have seen situations where the connection status icon (the little green computers) show an active connection, but no data is actually being transferred.

You don't mention the Operating System that you're using. If it is Windows 95 or Windows 98 or Windows 98 2nd Edition, you can download a Dial-up Networking upgrade.

Dialup Networking Version 1.4

Another thing you can do is contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) Technical support people and ask for their assistance. This service is generally free. They can talk you through various checks you can perform.

You can use this link to check if your connection is active. It is just a blank page that refreshes itself every two minutes. You can open the page, then minimize it and open a new version of Internet Explorer for your Web browsing. It should help keep your connection active.

Finally, I have had very good success with a high speed dial-up cable from Belkin. Click here for details. I have used this cable with a number of different systems and it always improves the connection and the "through put". I have found this cable at Wal-Mart in the computer section for about $14.00 U.S. or £8.80081. Do you have Wal-Marts in the UK?

I hope something here helps!

Dwight

Just curious, on your Internet Explorer settings, there is a tab for security, check to see if your settings are set at High, if so that might not let you get through to very much. I have mine set at medium.

Bedstor, yes the cable in your link appears to be the same Belkin cable. I don't know if the phone connections in the UK are the same as the U.S. but I've had very good luck using these cables.

And soaringhorse makes a very good point. If the security is set to "High", many pages won't load correctly.

Tefler, I failed to respond to your question "But how do you know if anything's been repaired?".

If the Internet Explorer Repair Tool doesn't find any kind of problem, it will just end without restarting the computer. If it does any kind of repair, it will give you a "Restart Computer" dialog box. When the system restarts, you will be taken to a "Run Once" web page where you can opt to make changes to your home page setting.

If it finds a problem that it cannot repair, it will put up a dialog box similar to this:
