I have been unable to access the internet on my home computer. The cable company tells me that my connection is working and everything is fine at their end. I keep getting the "Page Cannot be Displayed" page when I try to log on. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Dear Knutso;

To empty your Temporary Internet Files: Click
1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Internet Options
Click the "Delete Files" button
If you're using Internet Explorer, you can also click Tools/Internet Options.

Does your email work correctly? Can you send and receive email? If so, then your cable modem box must be working correctly. Try sending a test message to yourself and see if that works correctly.

If you can't get email or the Internet, there may be a problem with your cable modem, Ethernet card, or your connection setup. I doubt this is the problem in this case, because you said the Internet Service Provider said they see your connection on their end.

I'm assuming your mentioning the cable company means their Web and mail servers are working correctly.

Do you have a "Firewall" program or hardware setup? If so, check that. It may be blocking everything, if set to "Stop all Internet Activity" or "Engage Internet Lock" (These are Zone Alarm terms; your "firewall" may use different terminology) http://www.zonelabs.com )

If none of these apply, you might try the Internet Explorer Repair Tool.

It is possible that your installation of Internet Explorer may have some problems (usually this is caused by one or more corrupted program files). Internet Explorer has a built in repair program that can attempt to find and fix the problem. Running this repair won't cause any harm, and may help.

You can access this repair tool in one of 3 ways:

1. Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information/Tools (drop down menu)/Internet Explorer Repair Tool

Or

2. Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs/(select) Internet Explorer/Click the Add-Remove button

Or

3. Click Start/Run
Type
msinfo32
Click Tools/Internet Explorer Repair Tool

A window will open offering to repair the error, or to revert back to an earlier version. I suggest you allow the tool to attempt to repair the error.

If it is unable to repair the error, it will again offer to either revert to an earlier version of IE, or to reinstall the program. My suggestion would be to allow it to reinstall the program.

You can install an upgraded version of I.E. if you don't have the latest available. If you can use another computer to download the install files to a CD, the address is:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp

You could also use that same link to order an I.E. 6.0 CD program file via mail. I think it is about $5.00 for the CD.

I hope this will help, but if not, let us know. Perhaps someone else (TomGL2) will have a better answer.

Thanks, Dwight, for your information. Since none of the remedies helped me onto the internet, I did a clean install of windows and now when I try to log onto the internet, I get an error message saying "Failure to load internet connection wizard". Any suggestions on where I can find such a beast?

Just a guess from what you've described - but it sounds like you may have a bad network card. (you did say "cable company" right?) I say that because your os should detect the network card and establish the connection at boot up - the connection wizard (i think) is generally used to set dial up settings.

If you have a modem also - try plugging plugging a phone line into your pc and see if you can get a dial up connection (most cable companies have a backup dial-in number - if not see if you can borrow one from a friend) Check your Help on how to establish a modem connection. (I guess that's the Internet connection wizard) it should be in a folder somewhere under "My Computer" maybe "my connection" - I forget and I'm working in linux right now.

If you connect via dial up, then it's likely the network card, or it's drivers are fubar. First try downloading and installing new drivers, if that doesn't work - a new network card is in order. Not so bad - they're fairly cheap and easy to change.

good luck

To get to the Internet Connection Wizard, go to Start, then Programs, then Accessories and then on to Communications. You Should find it there.
