Somehow, I'm stuck with my AOL HP for my home page. I can go into Internet options and change my homepage there - to Google - but it won't "stick". Does anyone know how to fix this?

I'm using Vista.

The funny thing is, my little HP notebook (XP) still has Google as the home page and so does the other PC (Vista).

Thanks for any help!

I assume you use AOL as your IP? It does have a tendency to take over multiple parts of your computer, and doesnt seem to like it when you try to get rid of their homepage. If you're not using AOL as your IP, you may be infected with a virus or spyware.

Tree?
Are you using a Router or a Broadband Modem to connect and Have you AOL 9.0 installed?
An additional question are you signing on to AOL to connect? or Do you start in Internet Explorer?

Question to Chris: Do you think Tree should Try Google Chrome as a Substitute? (She'll like that)

Chris, I don't use AOL for anything.

Mike, yes I use a modem and a router but have never installed AOL. I'm thinking now that it may have appeared during an HP update. (?)

I open IE and it gives me AOL's home page.

When I open Firefox, I get Google as my home page.

What's Chrome like?

Put it in a Nutshell Chrome is like a simplfied version of Internet Explorer and is Very fast! And works independent of IE (no connection worries) there is an even faster version 2 on Beta Test but its not Stable (Very buggy)
www.google.com/chrome
Lots of videos and Pics on that Link to show you what you get.

As for the Other matter suggest you uninstall
any AOL Version software versions in The Add/remove software Section in the Control Panel and
In the Program Access Panel (if the Writing the same as XP?) click Custom> Choose a Default Web browser
Then it may have several options underneath
Tick the Boxes called enable access to this Program, and untick those that have AOL Listed then scroll down and click the OK button

Best Done offline

Next go online and any difference Now?

Tree I ran the Link on My Computer and I still have my Google Home page

Try this way to restore Google

Open the Google Homepage
Next Open Internet Options in the Homepage Box
paste this link in the Box http://www.google.com/ and Delete anything else in that Box
Next click on the Use Current Button
beneath the box then Click the Apply and then the OK Buttons underneath that button to "save and exit"

Next restart the computer , Is it Google Now showing when you go online?
If Not read on...

PS If you Have SpywareBlaster that Holds Copies of the Homepage settings and if that has been altered then the Page will be still AOL afterwards Frown

Is actually easy to check & alter back to Google Smile

Tree, sorry I havent gotten back here more often, been trying to get work around the house done. If you're not using AOL for anything, I'd suggest you go into your Control Panel as an Administrator, and uninstall anything in the Add/Remove programs section that has AOL in it. That could very possibly remove the AOL addiction your IE seems to have, LOL. As far as the address thats showing in the homepage address section, thats the normal address that HP puts in their computers from the factory. AOL pays them to do that, so to speak. (I really hate AOL, did I mention that?) LOL. It could be that once you get rid of AOL and its junk, that you can change your homepage again.

Bedstor, as far as Google Chrome, I've never even heard of it to be honest. I use the regular Google page for searching.

chris

P.S. Just noticed where bedstor already suggested removing AOL, sorry about that! I'm barely awake today! LOL

Chris, I've checked control panel and there's nothing that's obviously AOL. It must be attached to an HP program somewhere and I'm reluctanct to delete things when I don't know what they are.

I think I'll contact HP tonite. Roll Eyes

Thanks.

Here are the Instructions for "Setting" the Google as Home Page in SpywareBlaster
It is to stop Malware Hijacking the Page and something else appearing on Internet Explorer

Open Spywareblaster . Look to the Left side of the Window click "Tools"
Next click IE Browser Pages
Note the Menu setting before Proceeding is it set to Administrator?
If that is correct then look down the List of 5 boxes
Do they all say www.google.com (in the top 2 boxes ) and www.google.com/ie in the Bottom 3?

The "Start Page" link is your Homepage address Even if it says www.Google.com/ Delete whatever is in there and copy this link (include the "/")
Next click the blue Apply link to the right
If the AOL address is there Change that over to Google Too

Next Step Is to Change the Menu Setting over from Administrator to Local Machine (Global)
and another 6 boxes appear
They are for the rare time the Machine is reset back to default and The search is set to MSN's Homepage
Unlikely these settings have been changed?
and B) This Home page link May not work correctly on Yours, again copy and Paste it into the Top and 3rd(Default_page_ URL) Boxes only then Click the Apply link. http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157
PS The Bottom (6th) Box Customize Search is that showing as http://ie.search.msn.com/{SUB_...rchasst/srchcust.htm ?
Can also click the Apply All link beneath the Boxes to retain the Information

Lastly,One diddy no-brainer job to Keep SpywareBlasters settings and acts as a "system restore" if you mess up
Click on the System Snapshot link on the Menu. Just select "Create New System Snapshot" and Click the Go> button then Follow the Instructions and click the Create Snapshot> button on the Next page Takes barely 5 seconds
In future if Spywareblaster (or the Homepage/s) gets into a Muddle. You can use this to restore order without Doing the Manual Changeover (Many People have never noticed this Reset feature!)

Just a thought If you do try out Chrome It will
show as Google as homepage (but your countries Local page!) *Bug that thats always been there (a minor annoyance Frown)
Bookmarks /history can be imported from IE (a cinch to do, 2 second job) The History is important to really speed up the search suggest (personalizes it a bit)
The Data Does not leave your Computer Smile
I have Google Web History running and Its a separate Program / on Google account(and on Googles Server) and I have logged up 34,000 searches in 3 years on Google!
Big Grin They are neatly archived (and I can pin down lots of things) and I got thinking what if they were added to my (Chrome) History search? Worth a Proposal to the Google Help Forum as an Idea for a future feature?
PS All the data is accessible by me only anyway, so there is No Security issue Smile

Ooops
I Deleted the original Text by accident and Had to make up the last post in 10 Minutes flat (from Memory) But I forgot I made a copy of the Original, and its far more detailed tham that post. One of my "Master classes" Smile

quote:
Tree
If you do try out Google Chrome. It can be set as the default browser(May see a message flashed up?) and B) You will get I think, the Google Ca. Homepage(despite setting the preferences as Google.com) In my case its the "co.uk" pages. Bit of an annoyance, I can live with it Roll Eyes
And as I said earlier the Layout is very easy to get around compared to IE
And,there are many surprises
For instance The Search box acts both with the (Chrome)History Folder and the Google site (online) for suggestions (I think its even better than the .com version) and you'll Notice the speed difference(even on a slow connection) This is because of a small program (in the Background) called Google Gears ,which is always being updated. It helps out on many other Google Programs such as Gmail
Moving on, as regards Bookmarks,it has the simplest ever way for you to import your IE Bookmarks over (and populate the List)
There are only a few buttons on the Page. Look in the top right for the Wrench Icon. Do make sure the "Always show Bookmarks bar" has a tick against it.
Next look down the Menu to where it says Import Bookmarks and Settings and on the next window Untick those items you don't wish to bring across (4 tick boxes) Next step, click the Import Button... DONE!
To see what you have brought over, click on the Other bookmarks Link on the Chrome page (there are other ways to the same place as you'll discover later)
then just hover your Mouse pointer Over the Results
NOTE: Disregard the Keyboard shortcuts as Many do not work Frown

And a mini secret Tip to get to AP fast (If its a site you visit a Lot?)
This Browser Has "Tabs" so you can have Many WebPages open at once Cool
To activate this feature Find the white "+" (its to the right of the webpageTitle) ,click it
But something happens on the Page... the Most recent Bookmarks are displayed and there are 6 mini windows of the Most Popular sites on the Chrome History List

In the Bottom Left corner it says Show full history >> Only goes back for 4 days!(No way of altering this) But all the Links are "Live" To go back further You'll need to enter a key word into the "Search History" Box (Top of this page) This will look at the Imported Internet Explorer History links up to whatever limit thats set at. Does generate a few Thumbnailed preview pages on the List. But they aren't clickable!

And Tree? If they could do it (I'll put in the Request to the Google help Forum) I'd like to see the Google Web History Program contribute/merged to this Program(as an option) .So far I have 33K Entries archived. Eek and that goes back almost 3 years so far Eek Everything dated neatly (Is a Google Account program)
Chrome does not count as an Account Program However Roll Eyes

Yippee! It's (kind of) back to normal!

I have Windows Live OneCare. I checked there last nite to see if it had some browser information. It told me that I had 3 upgrades pending... one of which was an upgrade to IE8. I downloaded them... then seemed to have lost my IE completely!! The shortcut was still there and the program, for that matter, but I couldn't open it.

I went to download IE 8 from the net. It told me that a newer version was detected on my computer.

I went to my program files, and saw IE sitting there. I right-clicked it and then clicked "run as administrator" and it WORKED! I have my google home page back etc.

BUT, I have to open it like this all the time. The shortcut will not work. I right-clicked again and chose send to desktop (create shortcut), but it won't open.

It seems that I have to go to programs and right-click and - run as administrator each time.

PS, I just realized that I can right-click the short cut and pick "run as admin" from there too. It's not too bad, I guess.

I'm much happier now! Wink

Sorry for all of the trouble, Mike & Chris - and thank you!

Glad you found a work-around Tree! I tried IE8, but it was slow as molasses on a cold day, so I got rid of it.
