About in IE Help says 5.50.487.2300IC - Down at the bottom of description, it says this is a customized version. Tom had suggested this as a possibility of being a trojan horse or spyware version. However, IEXPLORE.EXE does say 5.51.4807.2300, as he said it should.
Do I have a safe version?
I renamed WEXTRACT (version 6.00.2600.000 -- it is 496KB -- to ie6setup.exe. However, this is the only icon on the desktop relating to IE. There is no ie5setup.exe icon on desktop.
Search for ie*setup.exe revealed the following files:

Becky, I'm confused. To install IE 5.5 SP2, you must have downloaded ie5setup.exe. If you could not find this program after the download, how did you run it to install IE 5.5?
You appear to have 2 ie5setup.exe files. The one located in the C:\Windows\Windows Update Setup Files folder is likely the legitimate file downloaded from Microsoft.
Right-click this file and click Properties, Digital Signatures and, under "Name", double-click Microsoft Corporation. You should see "This digital signature is OK". Under "Counter signatures", double-click VeriSign Time Stamping Service. You should see "This digital signature is OK".
I didn't see a shortcut icon to 5.5 on the desktop after the download, but the file was listed in the search. I ran the program from Microsoft's website. Did Microsoft maybe just start automatically depositing a shortcut icon (after the download) with IE 6.0?
The digital signatures were OK for the Windows Update Setup Files folder.
Now should I just delete those other ie*setup files?

My inclination would be to delete the ie6setup.exe on the Desktop, and copy the ie5setup.exe file from C:\Windows\Windows Update Setup Files to C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer (by default, it should have been copied to that location during IE installation).
I'm fairly confident that you know have a 100% Microsoft version of IE 5.5 installed, and that the IC following the version number is the result of some residual Registry entry.
In a situation similar to yours, I could not remove IE6 from a Win98 system by restoring the previous configuration. The solution I used was to delete the C:\Windows\System\iemigrat.dll file, then reinstall Windows. This method installs the version of IE included with Windows (no chance of a third-party version). The final step was to install 5.5 SP2 and visit Windows Update.
