I hope I posted this in the right catergory. It is an issue with Inter Explorer so I posted it herre...

I am having problems with internet explorer, which is why I haven't been on the last 2 weeks. (I am on my mothers computer right now)

Whenever I try to load a page through IE, I get the message that the page cannot display. Whether it is MSN, Answerpool Discussion pool etc...

A few weeks ago, I went and reinstalled Windows and I got my IE back. But then about a week or so after, it quit working again.

If I shut my computer down, and turn it back on, I can use IE. But only for about 3 minuets. 5 if I am lucky. Then it starts with the 'Page cannot display' again.

I can log onto aol just fine. (AOL being my email service) but I cannot log onto IE through aol either.

Also, I do not know if this is related or not but things in AOL are going extremely slow. It takes about 5 seconds for me to send an instant message, 5-10 aseconds to open an email...I have a few cards sitting in my email that I cannot open because I have to go to a link and the link won't load.

I am realy confused asa to what is causing my issues with Internet Explorer. I want to avoid having to reformat. But I shouldn't have to reinstall windows once a week to get IE back either.

Anyone have any idea what's going on? I hope this makes sense...

Here is my system information

AMD AnthlonXP 1700
256 RAM
30gig hard drive
Win98SE
IE 6.0
AOL 9.0

Thank You Very Much Smile

I am beginning to sound like a stuck record, for which I apologise

Go to this page, and download 'Hijack This!'.

Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Unzip HijackThis into this folder. When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary. Please delete the old copy so it can't be used

Launch Hijack This, then press Scan, and press Save Log

This will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.

open that file
Go to Edit | Select all
Now click Edit | copy to copy it

Do not change anything just yet
Come back to the forum, Right Click and paste its contents here

Hi Heather
If you say you can get onto AOL ok Aol uses Internet Explorer to make it work
Maybe the Security settings are corrupted Frown this will cause a lock out of some sites Roll Eyes
To reset them(and see if matters improved)
got to Keyword Preferences and click on Internet Properties (WWW): Right hand column
This will bring up the AOL Internet Options
Its a cut down version of the other Panel...
Opened it?
Have to do a lot of checking..
1st tab(General) Clear temp files and cookies
Also check the Home Page is set to what you want it to be? (if some thing different then give us or putasolutions a shout)
next Tab(Security)
Have to be careful here can block sites off Frown or allow really nasties through Mad
Follow these instructions and you can have full value and no nasties Razz Cool(I think this is where your prob lies)
All you have to do is this:
Click on the 4 icons in turn use the Custom level button the Default level button can allow some things through the net and restrict others Confused
My settings are based on what I have found works the best way cuts the xxx stuff off dead Razz
OK you Click on the icons in turn use the Custom button to open the panel set the reset custom setting menus as follows then press the Reset button to complete then press Ok to return to the previous window
The settings are
Globe(Internet) Medium
Globe and Monitor (Intranet)
Medium -Low
Tick in Green Circle(Trusted Sites)Low
Red "No Entry" Sign (Restricted Sites) High

Now move to the Content Tab Is the Content advisor greyed out? if its active you may have the security set too low?
Last job click on the Clear SSL state button below this will clear any out dated certificates (which cause the odd site to not load)
quote:
Click this to remove all client authentication certificates from the SSL cache. In an SSL session, when a server asks for a certificate to verify that you are who you say you are, the chosen certificate is saved in a cache. The chosen certificate can remain in the cache until you restart your computer.

and that is that
Press the Apply and the Ok buttons then reset or turn "off and on" the computer and see if my suggestions have made any improvement? Roll Eyes
Ps Have to manually log on and pages will be a bit slow in loading but speed will return Smile

Ok...so I DL the hijacker program onto a floppy disk. I tried putting it on my computer but it this window comes up that says

<unknown> has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. Quit all programs then restart your computer. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

I click OK and another window comes up that says

Restrictions- This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your service administrator.

I don't understand what this means?? Confused Confused

Me again!
Try these 2 things
Both in the same area
1) clear the AOL cache
click on the AOL icon next to the clock
select System Information>Utilities tab and zero the browser cache by pressing the top button the display will go to 0KB takes a few seconds
Now hit the button underneath "Uninstall AOL Adaptor" Now do a reset and you'll see a "Loading AOL Adaptor" message
Now log on to AOL and see what this does?
It was the bit where you said:
quote:
Also, I do not know if this is related or not but things in AOL are going extremely slow. It takes about 5 seconds for me to send an instant message, 5-10 seconds to open an email

That's the AOL cache it gets full or have you altered the temp file numbers in Internet Explorer? the browser may start acting up Frown
IF it now runs ok? Post again and I'll calculate what size the cache should be set at for best performance Smile

I sure am glad not to have a local access number for AOL in my area, it sure seems to mess up most systems it gets installed on. Even if they do get a number for this area, I most definitely will NOT download or install AOL from a disc, LOL.

This is very interesting. When looking for a service provider, I was warned by someone who repairs computers to avoid AOL like the plague! He said that whilst the service provided was usually OK, AOL takes over and puts too many unwanted things on your computer - my simplified explanation, he used more technical terms which I've forgotten.

AOL does have a habit of replacing TCP/IP with it's own version of the TCP/IP stack

I bet there were a few more expletives used as well Wink, but the thing is AOL do provide a service that people want, it's just a shame that they had to do it their own way

Mike, I did as yopu suggested. I set my cache back to zero, uninstalled/reinstalled the aol adapter...nothing helped. I still cannot access Internet Explorer and AOL still runs extremely slow.

Someone else suggested to me that I reinstall Internet Explorer. I went on another computer, and copied it to a floppy. After starting the installation process and clicking that I want the Typical install, it freezes up.

I don't know what else to do. I am at a loss.

But thank you for trying to help Smile

Only thing left to try is this:
On the page where you cleared the Temp files
click on the righthand button Settings... 2 things to check/alter
1) Change the stored page display to Automatically I think it holds more in memory on the other settings?
2) Pull the slide bar underneath 2 notches maximum from the left the number in the display will read 1500 to 1750 Mbs can fine tune it with the tiny buttons or type it in the box press OK to set it
I'd estimate you want between about 1525 to 1650 to be the sweet spot Smile Anything smaller or larger will slow your computer down sharply Resource wise Frown (something we have not discussed (Resource percentages))

I did set it to 1650 and that did not work. AOL is still extremely slow and I still have no access to IE.

Thank You very much for your help though, Mike. It was really really appreciated. Smile

Thank you too, putasolutions. Your help was great too Smile

Ok So far we have set the IE cache (made no difference Frown) AoL cache cleared (ditto Frown)AOL adaptor reloaded (Ditto Frown)
You have reloaded Windows (also ditto Frown Confused)
The only thing left Is RAM NOT the RAM on the circuit board but Virtual RAM this is a buffer area in your hard drive allocated to a cache like the Temp files
If it's setup wrong Frown or your hard drive is getting near to capacity Roll Eyes your resources take a dive Frown...and Its easily overlooked Red Face
First off Heather. Have a "Blitz" on the Hard drive see if you can uninstall anything thats not useful. Via the "Add/Remove" program or Uninstall links Roll Eyes
For the Virtual Drive to work properly it says on the link below10%is needed in space, thats 3GB. So The Maximum capacity allowed on your Hard drive will be 27GB plus the 3GB buffer Smile

This is the set up instructions for your computer setup you'll need either Dwights or putasolutions help on this
As its a bit complex Confused

I don't really understand much of that. I will have to ask my dad if he can undersatand it. (I just don't like asking him for help becaue alot of the time his solutions make it worse and I end up having to reformat)
But thank you again for all your help, Mike. Smile
