OK, I need to edit some PHP files for my forum. I was wanting to open them and edit them directly on the server using my FTP client. (WS FTP LE) The problem is when I right click the file I have the option to edit it, but it opens up in notepad. Unfortunatly, most of the characters don't show properly in note pad. I think they do in WORDpad though. Is there anyway I can change what program my FTP client defaults to when I want to edit a file on the server?

Also, I've never actually edited a file this way....does it work?

If the file has already been CHMOD to 755 will that setting remain?

Helllllllp!

It shows up that way because Unix has a slightly different character set than Windows. The most obvious example is that returns show up as somewhat of a block in Windows.

To edit with Wordpad follow these instructions:
(Please let this work...)

  • Click Options
  • Click the "Associations" tab
  • In the box labeled "files with extension" type PHP
  • Click browse and find wordpad.exe (In Windows 200/XP is is located in C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories\wordpad.exe In Windows 98: C:\Program Files\Accessories\wordpad.exe)
  • Click Open. Click OK.

WS_FTP LE should open PHP files in Wordpad now.
