I am curious to know how the technology works when I receive and send messages over the internet using broadband cable, DSL, dial up, etc. How does it get from here to there....cable or telephone wires only, satellite, fiberoptic cable, all of the above, other,..?? Also, does e-mail work the same way?

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. This page offers a pretty good explanation. The first picture shows the hierarchy of connections between you and the computer you are communicating with. Later pages go into the deatils about the different lines.
