I've just tried to install French AOL's broadband (ADSL) on this Sony laptop . It currently has AOL 8.0. Everything went fine until the last step when a notice suddenly appeared saying that the installation required a minimum of 128Mo of memory, that it had detected that AOL 8.0 did not have that memory and so would I either install AOL 7.0 by clicking on to Yes now or Quit? Now this makes no sense to me at all. I've given what it said, literally. So I was driven to install AOL 7.0, the inferior, earlier (?) system I had years back,, just to get the broadband ADSL connection. Now does this make any sense to anyone out there? Why and how has this happened?Of course,as at this moment, I now have the option of both systems; it appears that,at present, I can click on to the old icon for AOL 8.0 and start that still .
Bit of a puzzler Fred The usual thing with AOL BB is that it won't run on Version 8 and needs version 9 But getting it with version 7 thats a new one on me

I think this is one for AOL in the UK to sort out; by which I mean, of course, 'answered in English' since the technician is as likely to be in Geneva, Dublin, Schveningen or Brussels as in the UK. The French notice insisted that it be run on 7.0 , and it does. The reason given onscreen, a standard notice devised for the case, did not make any obvious sense, however it was translated. The instruction was plain enough though.
Update: Gupta, answering from Bangalore (probably; the answer from AOL came back far too fast for it to be from a European branch ) says that broadband requires minimum 128Mb RAM He suggests that I should find all older versions of AOL that may be lurking in the nooks and crannies of my machine and delete them. What has been happening is that everytime AOL 7.0, say, crashed it would be downloaded anew. That can't have helped. There is likely a whole load of redundant software in there.Once there has been a clearout the system should work happily using AOL 8.0
Fred To locate and delete the older copies of AOL Put your AOL disk in the Drive and the first thing it does is generates a list of all the AOL versions on your computer So all you do is select all the oldest dated versions and delete them from this window Leaving you with the current version Take you about 10 seconds work?

Fred You can also look in the Control Panel> Add/Remove programs Locate the main AOL icon (Blue Triangle) There are several others, but they are concerning the Broadband Setup. Click on it and you should get the same information as if you had inserted your AOL CD If no joy, then you'll have to source an AOL Disk from somewhere to do this job.
