We have been trying to get our two computers hooked up to the internet on a network for the longest time. We've had people come and look at it for us, but thought maybe the computer people on this site might know something the others don't. Forgive me I don't know THAT much about computers- asking this for my mom.

We have a new Gateway computer set up with Windows 2000 professional and one with Windows 95 on it. Do they both have to be on the same operating system? We have a networking card and cable, but it keeps saying the network card isn't there? it is though. and it's supposed to be compatible. Could anyone suggest some ideas of why it is not recognizing ANYTHING?

The new windows 2000 prof. is working fine on the internet seperately.... but the windows 95 computer is being awful- no one can figure it out. If you want any more details- PLEASE ASK!!! I'd love to get some help on this.

I have a few ideas....

Is your network cable a crossover cable? If not then you should get one. A crossover cable is for networking 2 pcs directly, a patch cable connects a pc to a hub. There is a difference.

If you do have a crossover cable then: On the windows 95 system first try reinstalling the driver for the card. If that fails then Open the computer and move the card to another slot in the computer, then see if Windows 95 finds it.
If that does not work then you might have a damaged card - you might have to return it to the store. (When at the store make sure that the new card you buy is compatible with Windows 95)
