I'm having a prob with connecting to the net using the net zero install disc. I'm not a newbie and i'm doing it for a friend. But I've been on XP and a cable modem for so long I've forgotten most of the things I learned from the dial up days. She first had a bad modem which i replaced and windows found it fine but it will start to dial then give me "no network connection found."She is running 98SE,500 Mgz,64mg vid,128ram on a very old emachine. I know I'm missing something simple but for the life of me I can't remember! Any help would be appreciated.

First, I suggest you run a diagnostic on the new modem to be sure it is working correctly.

1. Double click My Computer.
2. Double click Control Panel.
3. Double click Modems.

You should see only the installed modem. If you see the old listed, select and remove it.

4. Click on the Diagnostics tab.
5. Click on the COM Port that your modem is on.
6. Click More Info.
You should receive a response after a few seconds. Within the response window should should see ATI1, ATI2, ATI3, ... To the right of the ATIx, you will see the information the ATI command returned. Look for any legible words. ATI3 or ATI4 usually report brand names in newer modems. You should also be able to find your modem speed.

If this works correctly, the modem is working correctly.

Next insure that your phone line is connected into the correct modem port. There is usually two connections, a line in and a line out. The line in often has a icon of a wall, the line out has an icon of a telephone. You need the line in side.

If you have an old analog telephone (one that does not require an electrical connection), plug it into the "line out" and see if you hear a dial tone. If not, there is a prblem with your telephone line.

Next, be sure the number you're dialing is correct. If you need to use a number to get an outside line, be sure that is entered.

To give the line a "pause", use commas. For instance, if you need to allow a second or two for a dial tone, type in the number like this:
,,,555-1234
or
9,,,555-1234

You can use one, two, or three commas. The fewer the better.

If nothing here helps, please post again and we can continue on.
